Halo: Combat Evolved is, by far, my favorite video game – which is why I literally counted the days until I knew my retrolio pre-order of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition would be sitting in my mailbox so I could get my eager fingers on it, pop it into my XBox 360 and start playing. I was not let down in the least, instead I was thrilled beyond any of my already high expectations. From the moment I put it into my gaming console, until the wee hours of the morning when I could no longer keep my eyes open, I was shrieking with delight at the magnificently upgraded graphics and in awe of the gorgeous new colors that went with them. The anniversary edition of Halo: CE will keep you entertained for countless hours with new additions to the original campaign, better cooperative play, newly added Xbox achievements, remastered multiplayer maps and more. If you were, or are, a Halo fan, I assure you, you will not be disappointed. In order to be fair I must first confess that I am a latecomer to the video game world. I am a middle-aged female (48) that didn’t get her first XBox until 2005, upgrading to a 360 in 2007. Although I got on board with the pc movement early on, including a fair amount of pc gaming on my part, I just did not think video games would really hold my interest. At the nagging behest of one my younger friends I decided to finally purchase an XBox, which, by this time, was fairly inexpensive. I awkwardly fumbled with the controllers, for what seemed to be.
This remastered campaign is a great tribute to the original Halo. Most of the gameplay mechanics they’ve left unadulterated but have given it an incredible visual overhaul. The game long-time Halo fanboys know and love looks better than ever now – amazing detail on most every object, foliage that blows in the breeze, giggle-inducing visual effects, and remastered sound effects all add to a high-def, surround sound experience. Only complaint here is the dialogue audio volume – it’s so quiet that the rest of the game sound nearly drowns it, forcing you to listen carefully for dialogue (a shame, considering Halo CE has the best character dialogue in the Halo franchise IMO). Cutscenes do tend to suffer from Reach’s inexplicable frame-rate lag that plagued Reach’s cutscenes, but also like Reach, the game itself plays smoothly and enjoyably. For best results, play it on a big HDTV with sound system movie-theater loud : )The terminals add delightfully tantalizing glimpses further into the Halo universe and story, illuminating one cobblestone more along the road toward the Reclaimer trilogy’s mysterious events. And the skulls! Finally some skulls that actually add to the fun instead of ramping Legendary to Mythic/hair-pulling Impossible (which, admittedly, can be mildly entertaining for all of 20 mins if you’re masochistic). Infinite ammo makes the game a blast, and watching grenades fly out of enemies as you slug them is gratifying (and useful!).Achievements are a nice bonus, e.
Halo finally brings back how it all started. The campaign itself is a almost and exact replica of the old halo with the minor edition of skulls which were introduced into halo 2, a modern physics engine, and a convinient addition that when you press the back button it switches to the original graphics of the game 10 years ago. Unluckily in my opinion in the campaign new additions aren’t available like sprinting or assassinating. The flashlight does make its return though. Overall the campaign ages well in my opinion especially since the formula never really changed in the newer halos, but at this point it may be old for some. The Multiplayer was a huge dissappointment. It is Reach multiplayer plain and simple. Same armor same rank ect. so if you played on live that carries over. A few editions of the old maps and the old maps remade, and some game modes doesn’t do it for me.If you are a halo fan or want to try halo be my guest but don’t feel that you need to since you can buy the maps and play them on reach for about half the cost.
Everything you loved about the original but with better graphics. Graphics can be toggled for older machines. I found I needed to do this for the xbox 360 in multiplay side by side coop during the outside ring missions. Inside wasn’t affected. New pvp missions are a great addition. Loved coop tower defense maps.
the first Halo will always be my favorite one, it has a lot of things going for it that all of it’s sequels just don’t have. I’ve you liked it before you’ll like it again. The thing that impressed me the most was the amount of work 343 studios put into making sure this played EXACTLY like the original. Long story short they actually run the game twice, the original game is run without a single thing being changed, and then a second copy, with all the improved visuals is run on top of it. This makes sure that every little movement and action happens exactly as it would if you were playing to original, while still enjoying the new visuals. It also makes the cool little switch between old and new graphics feature possible. I would have happily given it a 5 star if it weren’t for the multi-player. they have replaced the original multi-player with what is essentially a reach map pack. If i wanted to play reach multi-player I’d go play reach, I was very much disappointed that I’m not able to go play the original multi-player online like I’ve always wanted to. I’d almost take off two starts for this glaring oversight, huge disappointment.
They made this game specifically for Original Halo chumps like m’self. I’m "that guy" who always says original Halo was -and always will be- the best Halo. I stand by that opinion, and was quite pleased when I found this. The feature to switch views from original version to updated version will blow your mind. Very cool. I think they got a little carried away with adding extra music during times when it should be deathly quiet, but I’m glad they didn’t modify the original tracks (this feature can be switched off, BTW). And they made Legendary mode harder. Way harder. It’s near impossible by yourself. It’s a lot of fun, but wow. There is a considerable gap in difficulty between Heroic and Legendary here, which I think was a little short-sighted. And I swear they changed the handling on the Warthog, which I’m not amused by.Still, definitely worth the purchase. While I’m not interested in seeing videogames go the way of Hollywood (remake city), I like the idea of modern updates on old classics. But like anything else, there’s a limit. I would not spend money, for example, on an update to Mario World 3. Because that game is perfect and perfect things should not be messed with.
Awesome remake of an awesome game! This is my favorite Halo game by far and an awesome remake. I love the updated graphics and the remakes of the original themes are AMAZING! I’m sure the Xbox One version is even better, but if you don’t have an Xbox One this is the one to get.
There are a whole bunch of reviews already here that sum up all the technical details….I think Relytia’s review is about how I feel as well. Halo will always be in my top 5 games of all time, just for the 100+ hours of it I played in college with my roomates. We would load it up on legendary and create are own challenges, like defeat assault on the control room level without firing a weapon. A few beers, and Halo made for some good laughs. So naturally, 10 years later, I couldn’t resist buying this game. The update on the graphics made it look like a current game. It’s not the greatest graphics ever, but it isn’t bad, and when you toggle the graphics to see what it used to look like and what it looks like now, you can really appreciate the update.I could play through the campaign countless times. It will never get old to me. The achievements are nicely done. I appreciated the escape the map room without firing a shot! The one where you hijack a banshee is good as well. All in all, I think the Halo series is in good hands. Hopefully we get a Halo 2 remake for 360 also! I think this is worth 25-40 bucks. I paid $35.00…and the nostalgic fun that this game has already brought me is worth every penny!
I must say, I’ve never played Halo 1 and knew little about it, so when this game was said to be coming back better and upgreaded graphics, I jumped on it. I’m amazed, shocked really about how fun the game it. Even 10 since it first came out, its still fun, how many companies can say that about their games?Campaign: as many has already stated, Have CE Anniversary is the same game, same type of play, same enemies. same everything actaully, the ONLY change is the graphics, no more, no less. The graphics are a huge plus and give the game a nerw look but still keep the feel of when it first came out 10 years ago. Story is interesting and keeps you thinking and engaged. Its a worthwhile game just for that.Multiplayer is more like Halo reach in that aspect, still fun to play some of the old maps and figh with friends who had the game 10 years ago. I don’t care for the multiplayer, I’ll go to Halo Reach for that. Halo fans might enjoy it to relive the experiences.Over all I enjoy it, its a worthy addition to my collection and I recommend it to anymore you enjoys Halo and great stories.
First of all, this game LOOKS AMAZING. They clearly put a lot of time into the graphics and it certainly paid off. The campaign is still magical and on those merits alone it would probably be worth 20-30 bucks. If more people bought it and played the multiplayer it would be a lot better, but the multiplayer was kind of stale because there werent that many people playing. the other thing is the pistol is dirty in multiplayer, better than pretty much everything. but it is pretty much reachized. the physics weapons were adjusted but the appearance was taken basically from reach. worth it if you dont pay more than 30
