Honestly, unlike a lot of Gameboy games made in a pre-established franchise, this game is not at all a port of the NES game but it, instead, an entirely new game that is very good.Considering it’s for the Gameboy, the graphics, controls, and music are all very enjoyable and the game is a good length and one you will probably find yourself playing multiple times. I highly recommened this for anyone who likes Gameboy games or likes the GnG/Gargoyle’s Quest franchise.

Welcome to the ghoul realm, where you are a gargoyle named Firebrand. This is a spin off series from Ghouls & Ghosts from Capcom. The challenge is on par with that game as well. There are two forms of gameplay in this game, the first is an overhead map, where you walk around and talk with characters. Its like an old school RPG where you buy things, search and gain information. Then there is the platformer action gameplay where the game really shines. Its solid, difficult, challenging and enjoyable. The difficulty is how slow you move and the lack of energy. More than two hits and you’re don. Of course it can be upgraded later in the game.As Firebrand you use an array of interesting tactics, the ability to hover for a period of time (you can get that powered up), shoot projectiles, and cling to walls. All while fighting ghosts, goblins, fish bones and insane bosses. The graphics are great, and the game stood head and shoulders above everything else on the Gameboy when it came out. With that being said, I don’t recommend this game for anyone under a teen, because its too difficult. To anyone else, play this classic, it started a whole new franchise.

This game is truly underappreciated. Of course, the game shows its age like any other that’s 20 years old, but compared to others of its time its top notch. The graphics and enemies are great and the music is phenomenal. You are Firebrand, a gargoyle from the ghoul realm. Your home is threatened by an enemy named the “destroyers” and you set out on a quest to find the fire of legend that can stop them. The game does a good job of mixing classic RPG elements with platforming. Moving from one area/town to the next takes place via classic RPG overhead map exploration. There is a menu function that allows you to talk with NPCs when you’re in a town and a search function for finding hidden items. You will run into invisible enemy encounters when exploring the map just like other RPGs but the battles fall into the platforming side, as does all the action and boss battles. The platforming is pretty standard; run and jump, shoot enemies with projectiles from your mouth. Being a gargoyle, you also have wings to fly and claws that allow you to wall jump which makes for some interesting exploration. At the start of the game you can only fly for a short amount of time and this is implemented into the game well; allowing you to search for hidden items and others that appear just out of reach. Along the way you will obtain items that allow you to jump higher and fly longer as well as new projectile powers. Not a lot of replay value here, and if you know the ins and outs of the g.
