Perfect
I’m not going to complain that that is really a story about Jim Gordan and his first experience as a cop in Gotham city. It’s a well written story. I only with it were a bit longer. Overall it’s a cool back story to Gordan and shows what a complete badass he is. And why he can hang with the best of them. The Bat included.
Frank Miller and Batman, perhaps one of the greatest couplings in comic history. Frank Miller helped re-define the Batman cannon and brought a darker and more desperate Batman/Bruce Wayne to fans. Style wise, Frank Miller is unique, but it does add a certain depth to the story line.
I’ve owned this graphic novel for over 20 years now and the story is just as powerful and just as relevant today as it was when it was first published 28 years ago. It’s a must read for anyone who claims to be a fan of the character and should be a part of any superhero library.
I collect Batman so nice piece
Take the time to experience the first and best exploration of the Batman’s origins. It has been often imitated but nothing compares to this great story. This is one of the best, if not THE best, Batman story ever told. It draws from the original 1940’s origins and brings the character from the splashy, superhero to the realistic, gritty hero that is known today.
Oh this is soo good.
Frank Miller really fleshes out Batman’s first year of trials and adjustments while David Mazzucchelli’s artwork is par excellence. My only gripe is that it ended too soon! Ah, but the ending is only the beginning of the story, you get the drift. I strongly recommend this title as a gift to anyone who has never read a comic book or who is looking to give one as a gift this year. The reader will not be disappointed.
Um… I don’t even know why there’s a space here for a review. This is one of the top five Batman stories every written (notice that out of the top five Batman stories, Frank Miller was involved; Batman: Year One, All Star Batman and Robin: the Boy Wonder, and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns). So, yeah, if you see Frank Miller’s name on a Batman story, just pick it up. And when you do… you’re welcomed. This is beyond an origin story, it’s the changing face of Gotham City. Batman is introduced, Gordon comes in from Chicago, and one of the greatest escape scenes that ever graced a comic can be found here. Two words sum up this story: HOLY CRAP! Pick it up, learn why those words are appropriate, and spread the words.
Picked this up after reading TDKR. Good read but it’s over too quickly, the artwork is the best I’ve personally seen for Batman
