Before EA Sports realized they didn’t have to try, they made NHL 2002. Yes, it’s been a long time since the players on this game were the best in the league. But this is the last in the franchise to actually play like hockey. The scores get up there a bit (your goalie will let in some softies), but the options in this game allow you to set things right. This is before big players skated at 1 mile per hour and looked like balloons. This is before defenders could steal the puck by breathing on you. The only downside: in 2-player mode, if you have a good scorer with speed, you can cut across in front of the net and put it in the far side. Play with the bars until the goalies catch up to this move, and you’re set…at least until your PS2 breaks down.
HEY EVERYBODY! Are you listening?Okay. NHL 2002 is great fun that offers fast hockey, a bit of card collecting, and the BEST pre-game entertainment available on the market.Enjoy; and hey America, it’s okay to say "hockey" y’know…saying "ice-hockey" is like saying "grass-golf".
In a gaming world packed with consoles the sports game genre has become a staple. Being a big hockey fan myself I tend to be more fussy than the average sports gamer, often looking for the finer details. And EA spared no expense when putting their all into "NHL 2002".Electronics Arts has always been the leader when it comes to sports games, dating back to their early days developing for the consoles Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. What I have come to expect is quality from EA, and to this day those expectations have always been met.The game itself is very realistic and true to an actual NHL game. When your players are thrown in the box their reactions will vary from sitting quietly to throwing their hands about and shouting at the Ref. After you score a goal your players proceed to the traditional team celebration with authentic sirens and music. Graphically the game holds up well, not to much to complain about in that area. But even the best of games have some annoying things, and "NHL 2002" is no acception to the rule. First off, the announcers, dear god the announcers. I don’t think it’s possible for these men to get any more annoying, with catch phrases that grow old within the the first 5 minutes. Ultimately I ended up muting them out, and found the game much more enjoyable from there on in. Also, music is provided by bands such as Sum 41, Treble Charger and Gob, and while I like most of them (except Sum 41) the repetitive playing of their s.
NHL 2002 improves some of the minor problems 2001 had, but forgets some basics: 1. The load times aren’t nearly as bad, but they are kind of annoying if you play a couple games in a row 2. There is a dynasty mode, but I haven’t gotten past the first year, so I don’t know how cool it is 3. The fighting is still atrocious. If you take any time to try and watch the two players fighting, you have already lost. It is nothing more than a button-mashing contest. EA needs to incorporate a grabbing button or a block button or slow the process down somehow, because fighting should be one of the highlights of a hockey game, (as it was in the 16-bit days) not one of the lowlights. This is very disappointing. 4. The idea of replaying a big check or big save while the puck is still live is confusing at first, but it is very cool once you become accustomed to it. This can be bothersome while playing the computer, but it’s pretty awesome when they replay a big save while you’re playing a friend.Much, much, more to say, but I am in study hall and I must go to class. I will finish review more in-depth soon. In conclusion, buy it.
NHL 2002 is a really good game probly the best hockey game out some things they can get rid of is the kiddish commentary but its not that bad u’ll get used to it some things that are nice is the break away cams the save cams the scorin cams the in game story the game modes and the golie A.I some things i don’t like is the fighting all u can do is throw punches some ideas for NHL 2003 is maybe scores & injuries from other games that are goin on at the same time urs is and more crowd animation more variety of music like aerosmith, offspring u know better rock music
NHL is by far the best game I have ever played on the PS2. I am already in my second season (thats about 160 games played) and I am still loving it. The graphics are good, but the gameplay is awesome!I own the 2000 version for ps one and the 2001 for ps2, and I have found glitches in the game where you can always score. But in NHL 2002 there is no easy way to score, making the game realisticBUY IT!
NHL 2002 is a blast to play, and has a lot of options and features that NHL 2001 left out. I personally love the wacky commentary of Don Taylor, and much to my wife’s chagrin, find myself quoting it almost daily. I guess it just appeals to my silly sense of humor. As Don would say-"I come for the scoring, but I stay for the hits!" Or in this case, the color commentary. Thanks, EA.
Considering that I was a huge fan of NHL 2001, this year’s version looks to be even better. Most of the problems that plagued ’01 like the chunky framerate has been eliminated, lacking create-a-player features, and more season options have been boosted to give even more replay value to this great title. All the teams, players, and arenas have been souped up and are tremendously life-like. This should be one of the must own titles for the Playstation 2 this fall.
EA Sports has done it again. Quite frankly, I am not a fan of hockey or soccer, but I do enjoy video simulations of both sports. This is the best hockey game since NHL ’93 for the Genesis, and is a must-buy for anyone who likes games with lots of action. The graphics are superb, the 4 difficulty setting means there will always be a challenge, and the audio is above par. The announcers are funny and have a lot of different phrases, although they will repeat themselves after a few games. The action is smooth and easy to follow, thanks to a large variety of available camera angles. There are in-game replays of particularly hard hits and spectacular saves, although this does tend to hinder the flow of the game. I turned this option off after a few games.Probably the best thing about NHL 2002, though, is that it is very easy to learn. This makes it one of the best four-player/party games available. It is worth getting a multitap and the extra controllers in order to play two-on-two. My brother, who is videogame illiterate for the most part, scored two goals in his first game and was checking people all over the ice.If you are a parent, there is some low-level violence, and the players can get into fights, although this option can be turned off.
These are PS2 graphics? I can’t believe my eyes. Go buy the game. I think I may just watch Hockey on TV Now.
