I loved this movie when it came out and had a huge crush on Robin Wright ("Buttercup") at the time.Watching it again on Blu-Ray was just amazing. The resolution is just fantastic. I’m more an audiophile than videophile but to my eyes the transfer was stellar. Or maybe it was just the magic of watching a movie that was not all CG – kind of like listening to a live jazz recording vs. the latest Miley auto-tune. But the countryside scenes look fantastic. The script is fantastic with some of the most quotable lines in comedy. Indeed, somewhere in Santa Monica, CA, there is a car with the license plate "TWUE WUV." I’m sure I’ve used "as you wish, Buttercup" to get out of trouble with a woman on a few occasions. The pace is great as well, a real testament to Rob Reiner (director/producer), William Goldman (writer) and Robert Leighton (editor). Three tight acts – nothing extraneous. We viewed it with someone who was a baby when the movie first came out. And she loved it, too.So you’ve got a story that resonates across a generation, stunning visual quality and what has proven to be an all-star cast. And that gives you Five Stars.
This movie is a known classic, so the only thing that could bring this rating down would be issues with this Blu-ray release. Fortunately, it is also superb! Sound and video quality are great, and the special features are really nice. I always want more extras than just director/cast commentary on these things, and this Blu-ray delivers. Also, the cover art is beautiful – note that you can flip it over and it still reads "The Princess Bride".
This film would be essential if it only told the story of Peter Falk as the grandfather of Fred Savage, but it’s so much more. First, the story was written by Sir William Golding, the same author who gave us Lord Of The Flies. This story is considerably more redeeming, and suitable for children of all ages, their parents, and their parents’ parents. It’s the story of True Love, and how it manages to survive multiple assaults. I first watched the movie with my children (they’re grown, and have children of their own now), and have probably watched it another 20 times since, with equal enjoyment. The film introduced me to Mandy Patinkin, who has since become one of my favorite actors, and showed the world a different Andre the Giant than the one known through professional wrestling. Then there are Cary Elwes, and Robin Wright, both of whom became major stars, and characters such as Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), and his wife (Carol Kane). There’s never a dull moment, or a player who doesn’t keep your attention, and as I wrote in the beginning, the interaction of Falk and Savage is remarkable. If you don’t feel tears in your eyes when Falk delivers his last line, then you need to see a doctor, because you have a heart problem! I’m looking forward to watching this movie with my four grandchildren, one at a time!
Such a classic, funny & intelligent fairytale. The author cleverly pulls together different genres of fairytales into this story. I looked for hardback & softback versions, but because of its popularity and age, paperback is basically the only affordable version. So glad it is still in print.
If you’ve seen it, you get what I’m saying. If not, you MUST watch this movie. I don’t recommend watching just any movie. I consider my taste in movies to be somewhat enlightened and refined, and having watched as many and varied movies as I have, I have not seen a movie that has so much charm. It doesn’t tackle the big questions in life, it doesn’t challenge you in any way, but it’s a movie or every person, for every mood, with a little of everything in it, without it feeling manufactured or Disneyesque. It’s like a hand knitted sweater made for you by a charished friend or family member, as opposed to one off a rack of identical sweaters. It makes me smile thinking of how many takes were ruined by Rob Reiner because he couldn’t stop laughing, because that means it was made with a lot of passion. I could wax romantic on The Princess Bride forever, but the only way to know it is to see it.
We rented this movie for date night. It was one of my favorite all-time classics I’ve watched since I have been little. The story is well done and the acting is timeless. It has dated a little bit though, what with the music being pretty low-quality. But, the humor is still spot on and family friendly. 10/10âï¸
Buttercup and Westley have something very rare — true love. Then, as befitting a good adventure, Westley goes off to make his fortune and is kidnapped by pirates while Buttercup is coerced into marrying the nasty Prince Humperdinck. Will they find each other again?Peter Falk is a grandfather reading this story to his grandson (Fred Savage), at home sick in bed, and the narrative is occasionally interrupted by the grandson’s incredulity or despair over turns of event. As the tale is told, the youngster learns to appreciate the magic of reading, and director Reiner has captured this lovely and essential aspect of the novel. He has also assembled a superb and flawless cast. Everyone is fantastic (though the ubiquitous lisps and accents can be distracting) and Goldman’s script is delightful. From leads Cary Elwes and Robin Wright, to secondary parts by Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn and Christopher Guest, and appearances by Billy Crystal and Carol Kane, each part is performed superbly. Special effects are not brilliant but neither do they detract from a story in which the emphasis is on telling a magical tale. Mark Knopfler’s score is quite beautiful and suits the mood of the film very well.Author William Goldman waited over ten years to have this film made, but the wait was worthwhile; likewise, many fans of The Princess Bride, disappointed with the previous bare-bones dvd, will find the wait for this terrific special edition worthwhile. This edition includes foreign and.
i’ve only given it 4 stars because with a film as well regarded as the Princess Bride, they’ve released a DVD with really no additional features (it has different languages and the movie trailer). the movie transfer is clean and sharp, though. i would give the movie itself a ‘5’. the soundtrack is good, too.Rob Reiner does an admirable job transferring the William Goldman book to the screen… a difficult task since this was Goldman’s favorable book (written for daughters) and my understanding was that at the time Goldman didn’t care much for the movie version.the movie has everything and contains some of the neatest dialogue centered around the idea of true love…’why didn’t you wait for me?’ ‘they said you were dead’ ‘death cannot stop true love, all it could do is delay it for awhile.’ ‘i will never doubt again.’ ‘there will never be a need.’the casting (and acting) was superb, although Andre the Giant as Fezzik is a little hard to understand. the fencing duel was great fun (fencers alert, all the disengages he did at the end made it all the more interesting).this movie is great as it gives women the illustion that i’m sensitive (HA!) meanwhile, i’m mentally recording all the insults used in the film for my repertoire (‘i’ll explain, and i’ll use small words so that you’ll be sure to understand, you warthog faced buffoon… it’s like i’m watching the Army of Darkness! ).really, this is a very very good movie and i’m sure it would become one of the most replayed film in yo.
This is our “family movie”. We watched it on VHS a lot when it first came out, and have passed along the tradition to our kids. We watch it at every family reunion. Even my dad can quote lines from the film.I’m not sure what makes the movie so enjoyable. It must be the characters and dialog, because the plot is pretty simple and doesn’t always make sense. Some people who watch it for the first time don’t understand why I like it so much, and I think it’s probably because it takes a few viewings to get to know the characters and understand the dialog. (Especially Fezzik: “I don’t like people to die embarrassed” took about 50 rewinds before one of us deciphered the last word!)
I was a child when I first watched this film. I watched it again when I hit my early teen years and noticed the romance in the film. That is what I really enjoyed about this classic. The cast was perfect together and played well off one another. The fantasy is fantastic, the comedy is comical, and the romance is so romantic. This is a movie that everyone should watch at least once in your lifetime. If you like goofy, it’s here. If you like pirates, it’s here. I will stop here before I spoil it. Watch & enjoy!
