Once upon a time, I saw this motion picture in the right place : full screen. Immediatly, I bought the VHS = FUN. Then, I bought the DVD. Always funny movie, with very good acting : all of them, even the bad guys. Bess Armstrong, cute, courageous and so … very crédible in her part. Tom Selleck, as the ace, and strong man (O’Malley), fighting the ennemies on the ground and in the air … From Turkey to China via some dangerous place in the Middle-East : funny times, fights, and the love affair growing slowly …with brisk turns (fine scenario). So, I bought the European Blu-ray …and at last, the US one : the same BR, with little differences on the box. Same fun, enhanced in the 2 BR by High Quality Pictures/Sound. I think …I will see it again ! Move, you will not have any regret. Sure !
I loved this zany movie, even though Tom Selleck sounds like he’s been sucking helium. He’s much younger here than his Blue Bloods self, and I don’t think I’ve ever noticed a man’s voice chance so much with age. His is better now, in my opinion, and I wish he would voice over this film. Never the less, don’t let that keep you from enjoying this. It’s a great movie, fun to watch.
Fantastic scenery which you see while watching two (supposedly) old biplanes fly over it. Don’t come to the movie with ‘great dialogue’, ‘great story’, ‘great characters’, ‘great acting’ expectations. However they rate a ‘good to very good’ rating from me. Everything is ‘tried and true’ and no chances are taken. I liked the characters even though the story is slightly worn (but more like your favorite sweater than ‘worn out’). I think these are called ‘Saturday afternoon popcorn movies’. It’s a great way to share an afternoon or evening with someone of similar interests. So get the popcorn, take off your shoes, turn the lights down and go on a fun trip with someone else driving the plane.
This is one of my all time favorite films, I never get tired of watching it. It’s an old fashioned adventure movie with a great story, great characters and is just a lot of fun. You couldn’t choose a better movie to invest a few hours of your time on.In my opinion it’s one of the most overlooked movie gems of the 1980’s and of Selleck’s career. Maybe now that it’s finally available on DVD people will re-discover it’s appeal. The characters are well developed and the actors all do a great job in portraying them, from Selleck’s washed up WWI fighter ace to Brian Blesseds native war chief and Bess Armstrongs rich party girl with a lot more subtance than appearances suggest. I’ve never understood why Ms. Armstrong’s career didn’t reach greater heights, shs is excellant in this movie. And the great Wilford Brimely almost steals the movie as Armstrong’s eccentric father. In my opinion this is Tom Sellecks best work, and he and Ms. Armstrong have great chemistry together. The cinematography and musical score are first rate as well. If you ever have the opportinity, watch this movie, you’ll be glad you did. It’s the kind of adventure movie you very rarely see anymore. This movie’s tag line says it all;”Take the High Road to China, for an adventure you’ll never forget”
After 29 years, “High Road to China” is finally on DVD! For a great, family-friendly film with plenty of action, beautiful locations, classic romance, and a stellar cast, it can’t be beat. I have loved this film since I first saw it in the theater and have subsequently worn out two VHS copies of it. The film has all the hallmarks of the classic adventure/romance story, which always makes me wonder why it never received the fame and popularity of similar films of its day.The chemistry between the characters alone makes the film a standout, while the post World War I setting makes one yearn for the bygone age of world-circling adventure in exotic locations. Combine that with real vintage aircraft, in some gorgeous and spectacularly filmed flying sequences, and this film is truly top-drawer.
Took a trip to the Himalayas just to see how accurate this movie was. If only I had Bess Armstrong with me. I could watch this movie 1000 times and this is the only place I have see where you can buy it. Thanks!
A fun adventure film regarding a rich heiress trying to find her dad so she can continue her lavish lifestyle. Bess Armstrong plays the rich, but spunky, heiress and Tom Selleck plays the former WWI fighter ace she hires to help her find her dad. Always thought this was a great movie. Originally saw it on HBO years age. This was one of the great old movies that, for some reason known only to movie companies, was never realeased on DVD. Well this one, along with ‘What Did You Do In The War, Daddy?’, have finally gotten there. Now if only ‘Scavanger Hunt’ would get the same honor.
My daughter and I watched this as soon as it came; my husband was in the same room but determinedly reading his magazine because he thought it looked like a "chick flick". As soon as the aerial shots started happening, he started peeking at the screen and before long the plot and the comedy of Bentik’s perfidy and his secretary Wedgeworth’s incredible shrinking tie had him enjoying the movie in spite of himself. A great adventure, glad someone transfered it onto DVD so we can keep watching it!
We love this movie and have it on VHS. Have been waiting for literally years for this to be available on DVD. Thought it was, since it showed available on my wish list. Ordered it, and it will not play on three different players. It will play on my laptop, but we don’t like watching movies on postage stamp size screens!. We have returned it and no replacement is shown as an option. Very disappointed.Very much hope that the supplier of this DVD can work out the problem and satisfy all of the movie’s fans.Okay, now for an update. My first review was one star only because the disc would not play. Turns out the disc I ordered was a PAL format and it did not indicate the format type on the disc or the packaging. I returned it, no problem with retrolio. Then, I ordered the more expensive version which clearly states Region 1 and NTSC. We have watched it successfully. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the video is not up to original film standards (not real sharp) and the audio is just flat. It actually does look and sound like a copy of a VHS tape. We all know what DVD looks like and this just is not up to the DVD standard. Even VHS tape actually sounds better! The good thing is that the film is now available on DVD, so it is easily watched, even though it is not the greatest quality. We fans of the movie will put up with alot to see it again and again.
Let me say from the start – I LOVE THIS FILM. It is big fun – adventure, humor, a little danger and drama. And I realize that this film was made using old technology. However, I have seen other films from that era that received wonderful revitalization and you can tell that they got TLC. This one didn’t. I’m disappointed in the following:*With the beautiful scenery – if they had truly refreshed the film before releasing it on BluRay it would be stunning. But they didn’t.*There are no extras on the disk*Given the quality and the lack of extras, it is expensiveI wish I had purchased the DVD instead of paying more for BluRay when the quality isn’t there. I was so excited I didn’t even notice there were no extras when I ordered it, so that is on me – but I would happily have paid every extra cent for BluRay if it had been refreshed. Note – watched it on a 60″ Vizio LED with a brand new BluRay player. So – enough of buyers remorse on version. It had been a while since I had seen the film and it was every bit as fun as I remembered and I’m happy to have it as part of my collection.
