Ok. I don’t usually give games 5 stars but ya’ll, this is a FUN game. I have twin 12 year olds and a 14 year old and we played 3 times the first night. It’s a pretty easy strategy game but very different from anything else I’ve ever played. It’s probably my new favorite game.
Got this for my daughter who is 9 for Christmas. She loves it, I love it, it’s just fun and doesn’t take too long to finish. She feels like a winner if she captures the blue dragon even if she “loses” the game so that’s nice too. Fun to pick a strategy and see who’s is best. My husband goes for all the enhancements, my daughter goes for the dragons, and I just try to capture as many point cards as possible. Already bought it for someone else as a gift since we like it so much.
I can’t say I love this personally…. But my 3 boys regularly request it and it is easy enough we can all play (3, 5, 7 yr olds) and include non gamer neighbors or grandparents.I should note we always modify play for the 3 yr old.Basically you draw cards till you have some kind of set like a 4,5,6 or cards of same color or same number. Then you get the opportunity to roll the dice to capture one of the animals or powers that are out on the table. The 3 yr old plays cards up so we can help.4 stars simply for how much it gets played even when parents are not are around.
My 9 year old son bought this game after playing it at church. The pastor’s kids brought it one Sunday and they played it in lieu of Sunday school (clutch your pearls everyone!! lol). It’s a fun game that gives the feeling of daring and challenge combined with strategy, but easy enough that you don’t have to be a perfect strategist to do well. My kids are 6, 7 and 9 and they can all play it. I was actually surprised by how quickly they caught on to the complexities, but they also play Minecraft and other strategy games so they’re used to this sort of thing. This is a great game for "inbetweeners" that are too old for Candy Land and too young for Risk. For them it feels like a "grown up" game, but it’s well designed for young minds. For the educational minded, this game is good for math skills as well as logic and reasoning. It also encourages long term planning if you want to do well when a dragon strikes! My oldest quickly figured out to save a great hand to be ready for a dragon. The only reason I don’t give it five stars is that once you get going it’s rather redundant. You’re pretty much doing the same thing again and again. But for kids it’s fine. As an adult it gets old. ;)
Fun little game. It is super simple and fast playing. I have only played it 2 player with my wife and we had fun. It doesn’t have a lot of staying power for repeat play in a single night.Depending on your gaming crew you may end up passing on this one if there’s a lot of other competition for a game with more meat in your closet. However, it does fill that spot when you want to play something quick and simple. It’s a fun mash up of dice throwing and deck building.
This is an AMAZING game for whole family! My husband has been playing D&D for a year now and our children have been wanting to learn to play, so we thought we would start them off with something a bit easier and it has been a HUGE hit! We play this every other week for family game night when the baby goes to bed. We have played just two people and we have played with 4. The two main kids who play are 5 and 7.
This game is so much fun! I bought it on an retrolio daily deals and it was very inexpensive. A great purchase as the family loves this game and the quality of the materials is great. It’s a good variation from your general family board games. My 11 year old likes the whimsical theme and it’s very easy for him to play and understand. I would guess a 7 or 8 year old could even play with parental guidance. Overall the game is easy once you get the rules down and play once or twice and it has great replay value!
We have hundreds of games, so believe me when l tell you, this game is amazing! Played with kids 7, 10 & 11 and they all loved it. They’ve just recently outgrown Sleeping Queens that we’ve played to death. Dragonwood is the perfect next step up. Thank you Gamewright! There’s a reason l have almost all of their games. They know what they’re doing in game design. The dice are gorgeous, the card art is great. You really feel like you’re walking through a magical wood capturing spooky spiders, finding enchantments and battling a fierce blue dragon.
It is difficult with a teenager and a seven-year-old to find games that we all can play, but we LOVE Dragonwood! It is simple enough for the youngest to plan his own moves, yet strategic enough so that teens and adults don’t get bored. The game play is competitive without being cutthroat, the art on the cards is adorable and the kids enjoy the strike, stomp, scream mechanic. They have been asking to play it every night since we unwrapped it. Couldn’t be happier with my purchase!
This game entails capturing “creatures†with different strategies. You are using cards and dice to catch different creatures. This was bought for a six yr old so with slight modifications to the rules he can play this and finds it very engaging. It is giving him a good understanding of different card strategies like learning what runs are, or understanding you need all the same color or number for this “attackâ€. Also, you have to look at the card you want to go for a see what attach is most effective and if you have the cards to support that attack. It takes some math that goes slightly beyond him sometimes because he is more focused on catching creatures but it definitely makes him think and he loves to play this game. As an adult I actually don’t mind playing this game. I think it usually takes us 45 min to play a game through.
