My daughters absolutely loved it.
I was apprehensive about reading these books to my 5 year old kindergartner, thinking he was too young, but he LOVED the books. Like other parents, I glossed over the divorce issues and substituted other words for the questionable language, but it was no big deal. He had a slight comprehension issue in some areas, but I either paraphrased or provided supporting explanations. We finished all five books, saw the movie (which really confused him since it omits so much from the story), and now he keeps asking for “new spiderwick” books. I think I will try the moongobble series based on another parent’s review that I read. After reading Spiderwick, my son insists on reading himself to sleep everynight, and his teachers noted how much more attentive he is at story time. Sometimes it just takes one book to turn the light on, and Spiderwick did the trick for my son.
Great books. I have read all 5 books to recommend to the students at the Middle School library where I work. I couldn’t put them down. I bought these books so my children could read them also (they’re always out at the Library!). They enjoyed them very much. Very fast reading even for a reluctant reader like my son. I highly recommend them.

It was a great Christmas present
This set was purchased for my 13 year old grandson. I was not aware that it was written for much younger readers. Despite that fact, he actually enjoyed the series. His 9 year old brother also read it and liked it as well.
This is a great series to motivate young boys (and girls) to read. My seven year old son loves these books and continues to reread them. He is interested in anything mythical, fantastical or animal-related. The excitement of good overcoming evil forces doesn’t disappoint. My nine year old daughter has read them as well. We originally checked out all the books from the public library and had to purchase them. The companion Field Guide reference book (not the same as book 1 of the series) is a hit as well.
I got this as a birthday present for my little brother (he’s 9). He loved them.The books came quickly and were in perfect shape. No complaints at all. I couldn’t be more happy.
This set of CD was invaluable to listen to the stories, learn how to pronounce the many names, and still enjoy the stories.
