Etrian Mystery Dungeon is more roguelike than Etrian Odyssey, so set your expectations. Randomly generated dungeons, item loss on death, enemies moving when you move, all are characteristics of Mystery Dungeon, now with an Etrian Odyssey veneer. The monsters and music come from the main Etrian Odyssey series, as do the classes and item names. The most recognizable classes from across the series have been picked out to serve your tanking/buffing/ranged attacking needs, along with a class representing the Mystery Dungeon franchise. The FOEs return in a new role: while they’re still large dungeon roaming enemies, this time they’re moving to attack your base of operations and will reduce the services available to you if you don’t kill them or block their progress. There’s not much to say about the story. More NPCs talk at you between missions than usual for Etrian games, but most of your time will be spent plumbing the dungeon’s depths. As might be expected EMD is a massive timesink. You’ll spend a lot of time building characters up, looking for loot, and trying to take on monsters over your level. I’d recommend it for roguelike fans and anyone looking to get into them. It’s not a game with universal appeal, but I am more than satisfied with my purchase.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon was released just yesterday, Wednesday April 8, and already, after just a few short hours of gameplay, this is proving yet another fantastic upgrade and success by Atlus.I have’t yet played this on my older 3DS, just the New 3DS, and it looks gorgeous. The gist: if you’re on the fence, a fan of any of the series of Etrian Odyssey or Mystery Dungeon (even Pokemon or Bravely Default), and own a New 3DS: add this game to your library! While the gameplay and animated scenes are gorgeous, don’t be lulled into thinking this is simple a beautiful, casual game. Gameplay decisions and party actions have lasting, graduated effects and as the trend continues, the threat of perma-death (post save points) is very real. That being said, bringing the entirety of the gameplay experience to the forefront, the party you build remains likable and intriguing, the world you are immersed in is sprawling, detailed, gorgeous, and yet the dungeons are hard, hard, hard.Yes, I strongly recommend this game for fans of the series or those seeking to discover a new game series and immersive RPG. But be forewarned: what you invest is what you should receive back. Even if you die in-game over and over and over…
What wonderful game!I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical about taking a tried and true formula and reworking it into something a little different. I wonder how it would play out. However, I am happy to inform you that for the most part Etrian Mystery Dungeon works. At first, you’ll just think it’s a top down view of the game you know and love, but then you will quickly find out that this is not the case. Placement of your teammates is paramount if you expect to be covered during battles. Say you have a team of all melee soldiers types (Landsknecht in Etrian-speak) you will quickly be decimated since much fighting takes places in tight corridors. By the time you free your crew they may have given up the ghost. They can’t support one another, because none of the party members you have (in this example given) can either heal, or use long range weapons. This would be a silly guild party, but I wanted to paint a picture for you.Let’s talk about what this game does very good.First and foremost, the music. You will be impressed and then you will be simply whisked away. It is a pure delight to listen to varied melodies in this game. I often found myself simply lost in the music tracks and visited certain locales, because I knew certain music would be found there. To me, that is a check in the plus column.Next up, systems! This game is packed to the brim with all kinds of things for you and your party/guild to do.You buy weapons, and armor to equip your party. But the equipment type and r.
fun and cool
Hoping to get the second game of this one!
All good.
The game play is pretty awesome, it’s a dungeon crawler theme similar to Pokemon Dungeon games, which makes battles a bit hard for those who like to crash through battles. The menus are complex, so take some time to familiarize yourself with it.
Another good mystery dungeon game. Thanks Atlus.
The Item came in great condition…
Being in Special Ed, I had a lot of free time at school, especially in my senior year. So playing video games in class (I’m not a good role model) and getting good grades wasn’t very hard. This game, while grindy and sometimes downright tedious, really did help turn countless hours from sitting down and doing absolutely nothing to being something somewhat productive.I’ve been a fan of Etrian Odyssey for years, and while I didn’t play the mainline Mystery Dungeon games, I do like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. This game does a good job of combining the class elements and the western/eastern rpg mixture elements of Etrian Odyssey into the random dungeon exploration of Mystery Dungeon. The composer for the music of this game was Yuzo Koshiro, and while the soundtrack is mostly a remastered album of some of his previous works in the Etrian Odyssey series, it’s so good that I’ll stop playing the game altogether just to take in the soundtrack.Again, this game does have a lot of grinding, and it’s not the most balanced game either. However, I do enjoy those elements as a form of a guilty pleasure, and I do understand why they would also drive someone up the wall. I suggest some level of caution before buying this game, honestly, but I personally found the end results of this unlikely match-up to be quite good.
