Great nostalgia
All of the mini consoles that have been released have look pretty good. Even the PS Classic, despite its paltry selection of games, was a nice looking system. Sega and M2’s effort with the Sega Genesis Mini is clearly coming from folks that love the hardware and wanted to make a great overall package. Sure, the little details on the system itself, like the buttons and movable cart slot flaps, are unnecessary. They are the best kind of unnecessary, though. I love little touches like that. The game selection is something that could always be better (and mods will let you improve it). What is present, though, is a nice mix of Sega titles, as well as third-party classics. Gems from Treasure, Capcom, and Konami are appreciated, along with the two new titles that are exclusive to this system. Tetris could be better, sure, but it is also a product of its time. And its still a good conversion of the arcade version. Darius is an extremely solid conversion of the arcade classic, down to its brutal difficulty. It would have been preferable to have had six-button controllers included with this, instead of the classic three-button ones. Games like Street Fighter 2′ Special Champion Edition practically demand the six-button controller. That’s about the only big downside to this package. Otherwise, if you like collecting these mini consoles, this is one of the better ones out there. And there’s enough in the game selection to keep you occupied for a while.
If you are wanting it in pristine condition, don’t order it from retrolio!Mine came in a pouch with no protection. Corner was dented. Top was also creased.Actual product itself is quality. Controllers feel right. Have a nice weight to them and respond well. Comes with AC adapter (Take note Sony!). Presentation of the packaging is top notch.Didnt notice sound delays some reviews mention but its been years since i played original hardware. This release is a work of love for Sega. For cons, wish there were more display options. Save states could be timestamped to know which is more recent. Missed opportunity for Sega to have an online market place to buy additional roms. Obviously also missing the 6button controller but i get the atheistic they were going for a launch edition look.Honestly considering cancelling my TG-16 pre-order and buy elsewhere. retrolio needs to step up their product packaging
I love this thing! I own an original console but dragging out the real deal and setting it up on a modern screen can be a hassle especially if you want to save space or bring it over to a friend’s house. While it doesn’t feel like exactly the same as playing on an original, it does a good job of catching the general experience with the benefit of convenience. The emulation is fairly good. The sound isn’t exact but is decent enough to play and never is unpleasant. The input lag for me was negligible. Things I might have liked to see is better implementation of dithering/transparency to imitate CRTs, possibly different sound options to better imitate the audio between the different original Genesis models, and maybe (dreaming big here) a more open source approach to the game selection. It would be lovely to natively allow for game additions rather than taking the future hacking route. That being said, perfection is ideal but hard to achieve and the Sega Genesis Mini seems to get most of the experience right with some small but expected flaws. For now, the game selection is adequate and they have made a great emulation box for the casual setup that captures the general experience well. It comes well recommend for those who know what to expect.
This is a wonderful piece of nostalgia! I’ve also tried Nintendo’s mini NES and mini SNES which are perfect, and this mini Genesis from Sega is right there with the build quality, which is fantastic! It’s impossible that they could include everyone’s favorite games but this mini console includes some great titles. Honestly, it’s worth the price just for Mickey’s Castle of Illusion and Sonic 2 imho. I do wish it contained all of the Street’s of Rage games as well as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles.
By far this is the best retro console of the latest batch of consoles compared to those released from Nintendo and Sony. This puts the earlier sega consoles to shame, I have a @games version and I think it’s junk compared to this. If your a Sega fan, it takes me back to when I was a kid.
Got this for my kid. He went down a youtube rabbit hole of old games. It looks like the classic but really small and has 2 controllers. There is nothing more satisfying than kicking your kid’s butt in a game. Even mom gets in on the fun.
Don’t be fooled by the knock off versions of this that have been out for a couple of years. This is the Sega 30th anniversary authentic mini console. Works awesome, obviously there are wired controllers, I fixed this with a 25ft HDMI cable that allows for the console to be near the couch. I use the same cable for other mini consoles. The game selection is really good also. A lot of fun!!!
Did retrolio Treasure Truck release day and picked it up in the afternoon. So excited! Brings back old memories of when I was a child.
I never grew up with Sega. I was a Nintendo guy + Sega was just about out of the console race by the time I started playing videogames. Having next to no nostalgia, the game selection is fantastic. Can’t speak for emulation accuracy, but it’s quality stuff. My only complaint is the lack of a 6 button controller which I had to buy separately for the few games that need it. At least Sega made sure the controllers were decently long and have a native option to access the home menu from the controller. The NES and the SNES mini don’t have that on the controllers unless you modify them to have a button combo with hakchi. Overall: It’s a great little console.
