I have played and beat Breath of Fire 2,3,4 and Dragon Quarter, this is one of my favorite in the series. This game gets a bad rap because it was very different from the earlier titles, I applaud Capcom for thinking outside the box and releasing this game. The story is a great, not groundbreaking, but good enough to have left an impression on me. The combat is where this game really shines, also the Dragon Meter, if the meter reaches 100, its time to start over. With a game this fun It’s not that big of a deal to me.Dragon Quarter, could have been a different game all together but with Ryu and Nina in it, this definitely a Breath of Fire game to give a try.

Firstly, as many of the other reviewers have pointed out, this game is not going to be liked by everyone. It strays far from its roots, and is now both far more challenging, and the battles are far more strategical. The learning curve isn’t very good, as this game sort of throws you in at the deep end. However, for decent gamers who want a challenge, and for gamers who like the tactical decision making that is offered with many RPG’s, this game is excellent. With the D-counter, using your dragon has to be reserved only for the toughest opponents, as once it gets to one-hundred, your character dies, and the game ends. With this, decisions can become very hard. Do you permanently hurt your character and completely annihilate the boss, or struggle through for the better result. With the dragon usage having punishing effects, as you can imagine, the dragon is incredibly over-powered in this game, and makes you feel awesome when you completely OWN tough bosses. But I have to agree, this game is both tough, frustrating, and not the best in the series. But it is a very rewarding experience! I loved this game.
I believe a lot of the negativity surrounding this game could have been avoided if the title had not carried with it the legacy of the Breath of Fire series. Honestly, other than the names and faerie mini-game, there is really nothing about this game that has anything to do with Breat of Fire and players should be made aware of that. To stress this, the dragon system, gone. Yes, Ryu transforms, but not into a creature that resembles Warlok from Marvel’s New Mutants more than any dragon I can think of. Free-roaming exploration, gone. You’re underground the whole time and there IS a time limit of sorts. You win by advancing not wandering back and forth between towns and dungeons. Fishing, gone. Yes even fishing has been cut entirely from this game. Even the magic and basic fighting systems which remained relatively consistent throughout all 4 games have been reworked to the point of an entirely new gaming experience. That having been said, this game is a blast. The graphics are amazing, the environment is eerie and the story is oddly compelling for a Breath of Fire game (other than 2 I never found the BoF story lines to be terribly interesting or motivating). Is it as difficult as everyone says? It can be, if you’re careless and at the same time, if you’re careful and remain aware of your situation it can be a breeze! The key is NEVER and I mean NEVER use your dragon form unless you are forced to because at the end you’ll want your meter to be as high as possible..
Oh my, the 5th game of the series. If I do recall, the last two games were phenomenol, both expanding the RPG world as we know it. I can’t really say the same for BOF5. Its got the goods, yet its missing some essentials.Story- BOF5’s story is very well done! It involves the character in all the BOF games, Ryu, but this time he is in an underground civilization. No one knows what the sky, nor the feeling of clean air is like. There seems to be no escape from deep tunnels and factories. All goes well until you meet an orphan girl Nina, who turns out to be a (*SPOILER*) created by a mad scientist. You are come face to face with henchman of the Biocorp, and they release a toxic gas that threatens the underground cities. You are forced to team up with Nina, and a thief girl, Rin, and try to escape to the surface before time runs out. (Don’t worry, you have as much time as you like)Characters- Unlike the other BOF games, 5 only contains 3 main characters. Not much conversing between them takes place, so this category is pretty weak. I was disapointed that there werent many characters.Battle- Battles are exceptional! Capcom has added a new system, where you can move around wherever you desire in real time….well, sorta. As you move, you AP goes down. YOu need a certain amount of AP to do attacks, so the more you move, the less you attack. You can also set traps in battle for your enemies. And each character has there own weapon range. Very well done!Graphics and sound- Graphics I.
This is a fantastic game. It is one of the best games Capcom has made in the last five years. Now before I start telling you why I think it is good, you need to know that this is not like the other Breath of Fire Games. Although technically this is still a turn based RPG, there are some real interesting innovations that make this game unique. First of all, the game is the most challenging Breath of Fire. I have played 1, 2, and 3, and this is definitely the most challenging. That is, until you figure out the system, and learn how to work the game in your favor. It is still the most challenging, but the challenge can eventually be managed. The enemies appear on-screen and you lay traps to weaken them before battle! It is a new and creative system. Depending upon how well you fight, you get bonus experience, which is called Party XP. So if you fight cleverly, you can level up more quickly. The Dragon Form has changed. There is no MP. Now you have a Dragon Counter. Every time you turn into the Dragon, 2% is added to the counter, that goes to 100%. If the counter reaches 100%, then it is automatically Game Over. You must figure a way to win without bringing him out too often. This in itself is a challenge. At first I resented it, but now I realize that it is a great additional challenge to the game as it is set up. Also, the Dragon Form is obscenely strong in this game. You can kill even the end boss in Dragon Form with only 15-20% of the counter. The music is.
Got this for my son for Christmas. He loves these games. It arrived when it was supposed to. Thanks. Happy New Year Everyone.
Thanks for the game. It was everything you said it would be and more. Virtually untarnished. Thanks.
Breath of Fire Dragon Quater is a great looking game with a pretty good battle system, awesome music, and a very interesting story. The thing that screwed it up a bit for me were two things: 1) the fact that i’m crippled severely if I use the best skill in the game too much… the dragon power, and 2) the lack of the ability to make permanent saves throughout the game whenever I wanted to because save coins are scarce. Other than those two annoyances, the game is fun.
This game successfully combines strategy and a great storyline to make one of the best RPG games I have ever played. The graphics were fantastic for a ps2 game of its time and I liked the soundtrack. It was hard, but who wants a game you can beat the first day. The only thing I don’t like about this game is that they have not made a sequel yet.
