This game surprised me, loved the story, the quality, the overall experience, it’s definitely one of my favorite RPG’s of all time. I highly recommend this game to fans of the RPG genre.
Last year did not see too many great games until the final 4 months. During that time we saw some some great FPSs (Halo 2, Half Life 2), a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto saga, a new Metal Gear Solid and two really good rpgs, Nocturne and Shadow Hearts: Covenant.Covenant is a direct sequel to Shadow Hearts 1. While you don’t have to play SH1 to understand the story to SH2, it really helps because it explains the backstory of the main character Yuri and why he is who he is and why the world is at the stage its at. What’s interesting about the story is that, for those who have played SH1, everything you know from the first game changes. Motives are more fully revealed and twisted, people who you thought were evil were actually trying to do something good and some characters make surprising returns. The story is so good, in fact, that it has become my favorite RPG that I’ve seen in ages. Not only is it good but it is emotional and actually has a heart. I don’t want to ruin too much of the plot because it really is a thrilling story; however, there are moments of emotion that hark back to days of FFVII and the death of that pivotal character. Along with the story, the characters are some of the most unique ones ever seen in an rpg. From the puppet master who has to find “stud cards” to give to tailors so they will make him new outfits for his dolls, to a vampire wrestler with the unfortunate name ‘The Grand Papillon’ (The Great Butterfly), they range the gamut from hilla.
I never played the first Shadow Hearts, and I can tell you that I was completely impressed with Covenant. I love the innovative battle system, and the in-game variety. The story is entirely refreshing. I find it compelling that the plot centers around secret societies, not unlike the Illuminati of the real world– well, except of course, for the wild ability to unleash evil over the entire planet (using the power of souls, gods, magical power and other junk like that). The cast of characters is well done. The voice acting is exceptional. Yuri is very believable, but I get extremely annoyed every time I hear Lucia talk. Also, the little innuendos, and bits of humor are very well placed within the story line. It’s semi-adult humor and I got quite a few kicks from it.I’m a fairly avid Final Fantasy fan, and I’d say this game is highly competitive in the fantasy genre. In fact, I’ve been playing FF online, and this console game sort of ripped me away from the cyber world of Vana’diel.I’d recommend this game to any RPG fan, regardless of whether they’ve played the first one or not.
Had a problem with the game but the shop and retrolio stood by me 100%. Highly recommend this shop. Will buy from again. Thanks.
Excellent quality
This game is amazing for a RPG game that was released in 2004. The characters are detailed well and the story is very good. Trying to find or get some of the important items or equipment in the game did take some time but it was indeed fun taking the time to find them whether it be from a dungeon or cave. Overall, this game had good graphics, the story was very interesting and fun, and the game scenes were one of the best from any game I have seen or played.Pros-Gameplay (Storyline)Unique CharactersGraphicsMusic SoundtrackJudgment RingCombos with TeammatesLots of SidequestsCons-Long Dungeons
I loved the first Shadow Hearts. Im glad I finished it and Im glad they made a second one because I was completely bummed at the ending of the first and knew there had to be a sequel.I loved the beginning to ending of this game. The game starts off mostly with the main character reminiscing mostly about the first game and Alice.I could say this game is a lot more interesting than the first because they added in more interesting characters and one particular character which I am not gonna spoil who it is but you will be in for a huge surprise.I love the soundtrack because it has a eerie and unique sound to them. I still love the game system battles even though they can be difficult at first but it gets fun for awhile which is why I love it.I absolutely have no complain about this game. Great story, drama, action. And man such a great romance story if your looking for a good RPG game on PS2 with romance in the plot. But you will only gain it if you get the good ending. It pretty much ties up loose ends in the game. I suggest getting a walkthrough since there will be difficult puzzles to go through and the things you need to know to get the perfect ending.yup no complaints except Im concerned with what you will find out at the good ending too. But I won’t spoil that. :) so I recommend this game, but play the first one or you probably won’t know what happened if you want to get into the story of Alice and the main character more.
As Covenant stands it was at least to me the best in the series. The first game while very good still had dated visuals and the Ring of fate system was not quite so polished. From the new world by comparison did everything awesomely and yet despite that fact it seems shorter with a story line not as well contrived. I still strongly suggest you get every game but if a sadistic leprechaun presented you with the choice to only get one Shadow Hearts title Covenant would be the best route. Some people say Covenant had a weak story and I never understood that argument. Firstly it ties into the previous game perfectly and secondly there were many unexpected twists especially concerning Karin the beautiful and sweet German lieutenant. So who is main hero Yuri? Yuri is a harmonixer, a guy like any other save for the fact he can turn into various monsters. To unlock them he must go to a dismal “graveyard” in his own mind to fight each of his odd psyches in order to transform into them. Just by that explanation alone Shadow Hearts seems more original then more than half of the rpgs out there.Yet Yuri is presented with a problem. To save the world the girl he loved had to die and Yuri handles all this like a true human being. He swears, he cries, he drinks alcohol , and to make up for things he considers his fault he helps the people in a small German village survive and avoid the persecution of the military. This my friends is why Yuri is so great. He is a good person but he is not perfec.
This is my favorite turn based RPG. A impressive story with a convincing protagonist: Yuri. This game is of quality like any Final Fantasy I’ve played. The only element I would critic this on is if you like to get everything this game becomes too easy. It’s not very challenging. That’s why I gave it four stars for fun. That said everything else is stellar.
I have been a devout fan of Shadow Hearts since I played the first one. I backtracked and played Koudelka just to get a feel for SH1’s backstory. I was reluctant to get Covenant because many sequels (especially in this genre) do not outshine the original. Ever since I have played it, I have never looked back. I have not even picked SH1 back up. This sequel spoils you. In the first SH, the J. Ring changed after each weapon…for everyone. You would have to get used to, minimum, 24 different rings. Moxibustion costs way too much, too. The first required some leveling–and I HATE RPGs that require too much leveling. I can’t stand leveling. It should happen normally through the natural progression of the game. Not to mention that cheats are not necessary here! You can hold/buy up to 99 Strike Areas and 99 Hit Areas with the millions of dollars you can get by using Lucia and having her pull “The Tower” tarot card (you’ll feel like you’re playing the lottery). In SH1, I cared little for having to empty Yuri’s malice every ten or less fights. I got into some really scary situations sometimes. It seems like EVERY problem that SH1 had that kept it from being perfect was taken out in the sequel. That is why, despite all of the RPGs I have played in my lifetime(dozens fold), This game is MY FAVORITE. Yes, no other game gets this honor from me–and Star Ocean Second Story, the Arc the Lad series, Growlanser, Disgaea, Nocturne, Stella Deus, Legend of the Dragoon, Digital Devil Saga, Jade.
