I am pretty sure this is the first time I’ve ever been compelled to review a product on retrolio. I have unsuccessfully tried numerous times in the past to learn guitar, quitting every time after a few days to a couple of weeks. I got Rocksmith and, at 27, have finally kickstarted my way to being a guitarist. It’s very easy to use, allowing you to choose how you progress while giving you missions, which are essentially just suggestions based on where you’re at. You can take lessons, play games to practice important techniques, learn songs, or just jam. There is also a lot of DLC, which costs a bit of money, but lets you fill up your list with songs you like. The game divides each songs into different pieces, and each will gradually upgrade automatically as you master the part at the current level. Of course, you can also manually change the difficulties for each part (up to 100, which is how the song is actually played). The lessons start out with basics (holding a pick, strumming, etc.) and move up to "master class" techniques like two-handed tapping. The games are quite varied, each with a unique and fairly retro style, and allow you to practice volume dynamics, string skipping, fretting, sliding, chords, scales, tremolo, bends, and harmonics through such varied objectives as killing zombies, racing through traffic, robbing treasures from a museum, and ‘Star Wars’ spaceship fighting. Some people seem to have issues with constant tuning. I’m not sure if it’s a p.
I’m 52 years old, left handed and have NEVER played guitar in my life, but always wanted to. I got an electric guitar for a gift and bought Rocksmith for myself. I’ve have had it for less than a month now and am very pleased with the progress I have made. The lessons are very simple to understand and follow. I love the way Rocksmith starts you off at one level and adjusts to your ability. Slower or faster, simpler or more complex. As you progress, it progresses, if you need more work, it slows down for you. The best part of all is I can practice when I want, for as long or short as I want. Twice a day, twice a week, it’s up to me and the game never complains! Trust me, this game has more patience than any human teacher could and is ready to pick up where we left off when I am. I highly reccoment this game for anyone of any age (righty or lefty) any experience level. If you want to play guitar…get this game!
I would like to start off by saying this is not a game, it’s a tool. I have mentioned Rocksmith to many people, and they usually say "isn’t that just a fancier guitar hero." No it’s nothing like guitar hero.I took lessons when I was younger, and never really learned much or got into guitar. I bought this and plugged the electric guitar that I had sitting around for 10 years in, and it has been phenomenal. You can start off by taking lessons, which then go into a practical exercise. The exercises are designed to compliment the lessons and to make sure you actually master the skill. At any moment you can start learning songs, which the system has designed to help you progressively learn. They will start off with a few notes, and when you have mastered those, will continue to increase difficulty and speed until you are actually playing the song. Another amazing feature is session mode, you choose the instruments, and start jamming, and the instruments start playing along with you, it’s a fun way to try out new things and just jam out.If you have kids, I strongly encourage you to buy this for them. It’s a great learning tool, and they are doing something constructive. For those of you worrying about or have questions about a bass guitar. I bought a bass guitar, something that I have never played in my life, and fell in love with the Bass thanks to Rocksmith. It taught me lessons from playing with my fingers to slap pop, absolutely awesome.
I had the original Rocksmith and found it pretty difficult because I’m a new guitarist. Very new. I started because of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, which lead me to this game which I felt would have been the next evolution to the guitar hero saga for me at least. This 2014 version is much better than the original and I enjoy the difficulty progression which is much more reasonable. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because the number of songs that they give you is limited, and their model is really focused on in game purchases. Which is also not very cheap. I’ve already spent $50 and it looks like I’ll need to spend another $70 to get all the songs I want but… I suppose the converse, guitar lessons will end up costing more. But since it’s not a personal professional lesson and it’s at my own paces with me learning without a ton of correction it’s still a bit pricey. One of my favorites though is that I can play my fav songs and stutter through while learning how to actually play those songs. If you’re interested in learning how to play while not following the standard chord progression lessons this is the way to go!
Well after about 6 hours with this I thought I sucked a lot…….I mean I could barley get two notes to come up at the same time. Lag Lag Lag. So i just played the arcade games there a good teaching tool. Having some guitar skills I knew I wasn’t that bad, So I busted out my Xbox av cables broke the plastic part off so I could fit them and the HDMI both in the Xbox and ran audio directly to the stereo. Decided to play Nightmare by Avenged Sevenfold. got 40% on my first try. This game is a wonderful teacher…. I will learn many scales notes song ect. If you don’t want to pay for guitar lessons buy this and by the time you want to sit down with someone you will be able to play already.
WARNING!! Extremely addicting!I bought this for my husband who has no musical background at all. He loves it. It’s really exciting to watch him accomplish a goal and learn to play along with songs. He gets mad at me because I keep stealing his "play time" by hogging the game. There is so many neat features, it’s hard to list them all, but I would definitely suggest this to anyone wanting to learn to play the guitar and to practice techniques. I would say it’s one step down from having an actual tutor teaching you in person. I do wish there was a little more song choices with jazz/blues, but I do see you can download additional song packs off the Xbox site for a small fee. I will cross that bridge once I have mastered some songs from the disc. We bought a separate electric guitar and it works just fine with the system. Just be sure to get the Cable that is required for the Xbox. I used to make fun of Guitar Hero and Rock Band because you don’t really learn guitar by pressing colored buttons on a toy. It has a similar teaching concept by using colored queues for each of the 6 strings, but you actually play a real guitar and learn cords, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, tremolos, etc. This is like the "Rosetta Stone" of learning to play the guitar.
Very great tool for learning and playing songs and your guitar. I give it 4 stars because half the songs are not very great. It does have 1 A7X song and 1 Iron Maiden song, but that’s about all the metal it has, considering that metal is a huge part of guitar history, that should include some metallica that isn’t only accessible through dlc
I bought this edition because it supports the bass guitar. It gives you feedback. I’m learning useful stuff. It’s cheaper than professional lessons and it’s on my schedule. The only negative is that the sound of my bass seems slightly delayed when it comes out of the speakers compared to what I get from my amp. I can play quarter notes and 1/8 notes, but 1/16’s are right out. I haven’t tried it with a regular guitar yet. After I get the bass down, the Strat is next. The problem isn’t annoying enough to make me regret buying it. It’s good enough to recommend to others and you will learn music. It’s helping my technique.
I was a player in the 80’s, I gave up do to lack of any useful tool’s and the shoddy instruction of Metal Method….and playing a stupid scales over and over without guidance. This is giving me the much needed boost to return to playing, I get to participate in songs I like, even if I am slow. I am rebuilding old skills and having a blast and it is nothing now to practice 4-5 hours when I get the chance! Love it!
Right from the start when I put in the disk this game delivered. I had taught myself basic chords etc. over the past 5 years and in 1 week of playing Rocksmith I had learned more than I had on my own in 5 years! This game is unlike any game I’ve ever played. As you advance in your skills the difficulty gets harder automatically until you are playing the actual note for note song. I’m a huge fan of being able to actually play the real music and not just some dumbed down version. The guitarcade is one of the most valuable areas of the game for me. I can practice technique and have a ton of fun at the same time!Oh yeah, it has a colorblind setting to turn on for those of us who struggle with colors. This was a huge help and I REALLY appreciate that Ubisoft included this!As a huge side bonus, Garage Band recognizes the True Tone cable so you can record your own music with what you learn from the game!!
