What I loved about the book was how it belt your undivided attention at all times, every corner turned was another adventure. I would recommend this book to beginners and even expert readers. I personally don’t read much and was told to give it a try, and oh boy were they correct! On to volume 2 !
If you’re a fan of Victorian genre literature and have any interest in comics, this will very probably appeal to you. I’m a very casual comics reader, never buying any but borrowing anything that’s at the library except for manga or pure superhero fare. As for 19th-century genre lit, when I was a child, I read some Stoker, H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, and the like. All that said, this is a highly entertaining work, probably the most purely enjoyable trade comic volume I’ve encountered. The concept is pretty outstanding: Moore’s taken public-domain “heroes” of the 19th-century and remixed them into a classic superhero team in the spirit of Justice League, X-Men, etc. They are tossed into a steampunk version of Victorian London to do battle with a nefarious villain from the same era of genre-lit. In this volume, the head of the British Secret Service orders his minion (Campion Bond), to assemble a team for a secret mission. He starts with Ms. Murray (the widowed wife of Mr. Harker from Dracula), who drags the gaunt former adventurer Allan Quartermain (the intrepid explorer of H. Rider Haggard’s stories) from the depths of a Cairo opium den. They are spirited to safety by H.G. Wells’ incomparable stern Sikh pirate, Captain Nemo, in his magnificent submarine technological wonder The Nautilus. Next stop, the backstreets of Paris, where a beast is terrorizing the prostitutes of the Rue Morgue. This ends up being the terrifying Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, whom they barely manage.
One of Alan Moore’s most celebrated comic masterpieces, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a treat for comic fans and literary buffs alike. In 1898, the mysterious M recruits adventurer Allan Quartermain, Miss Mina Murray, Captain Nemo, Invisible Man Hawley Griffin, and cowardly Dr. Henry Jekyll, and of course, his devilish alter ego, the Hulk-ish Mr. Hyde. Moore’s love of classic, English literature is so apparent throughout this first volume, with his deep and rich characterizations and twisting storyline. Kevin O’Neil’s artwork is masterful as well, and his vivid drawings bring Moore’s lush world to life that hasn’t done his work justice since David Lloyd and Dave Gibbons. If there’s any real nitpicking that can be done with this book, it’s that Mr. Hyde isn’t so much brutish as he is much like an insane Hulk, which is nice for a change of pace for the character, but seems like a bit of a predictable idea for Moore. That aside, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a masterwork of comic and literary fiction, and believe it or not, it only gets better from this point on.
I will not rate the content as some everyone has different tastes and thus will only comment that the book came well packaged, neat and with no marks. The artwork is very well done and story is easy to follow.
I gave this to the girlfriend for christmas and she loved it. Perfect condition and excellent! I would recommend it to everyone, except my eight year old niece.
I’d started with the paperback of Vol.1, and loved it — I enjoyed playing Spot the Reference — and got the hardback Vol.2 and Black Dossier. Thinking it would be nice to have an all-hardback set, I kept my eyes open. Spotted it on retrolio and leapt. The shop got it to me quickly and in great condition (though used) as promised.
Epic classic. Dashing, 17 more words required. Oh, well, nice, nice, nice, very, very, verry nice piece of narrative. Nice.
This work brilliantly intertwines a cast of legendary literary characters in a plot that will leave you guessing from page to page. Not for kids or the faint of heart.
I have a weird relationship with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series. I’d seen the movie first, which robs this book of most of it’s shock value, but I still like this book better than the movie. The keywords being ‘this book’, as I feel this series goes down the drain before too long.Reviewing just this book, the story is really strong. Moore brings in characters from the best Victorian literature, including characters from Dracula, 20,000 leagues under the sea, and Poe. All these different story-worlds are strung together seamlessly, and Moore’s twists on the characters have a tendency to make them a lot more interesting.Other things I like about this are best illustrated in contrast to my thoughts on the rest of this series. The main character, Mina, is a very competent leader in this book, but she gets worse as time goes on. The plot flows into the literary references, rather than Moore wasting time putting in Easter eggs nobody cares about. The plot isn’t fantastic like in Watchmen, and that’s what keeps this book from earning a five star rating, but it was still better than what’s to come.As a stand alone book, this is pretty good, and who knows, you may like the full series better than I did. Time will tell.
Great quality even if used. Came in quickly as well, thanks.
