So you might recognize me from my previous review of Gallop Racer: 2001. I must say I have never played any of the other Gallop Racer games in the series (Gallop Racer, Gallop Racer 2003: A New Breed and Gallop Racer 2006) but after playing 2001 for so long, I decided to kick-up some dust and try something new. I read all the reviews for the other games and found 2004 the most reliable chance for fun.If you have played any of the previous Gallop Racer gems, you know the drill. You are a jockey in a Horse Racing World. You enter horses in races and race them to earn points/money. Things start out really rough, you are the lowest jockey with the cheapest claimers. Once you win, you move up to being a “bug-boy,” and start riding more classier thoroughbreds. With 2004 you finally have that “realistic feel.”But let me tell you, if you like games that within a days time you can be the best (like those silly car racing games that are popular now) than any Gallop Racer game is not for you! This is a type of game that takes years of frustration and practice to master, and requires you to think very quickly, to study and know the horses you are riding and intelligence! If you want something easy, go play you’re Barbie Horsey Games, leave Gallop Racer be… But anyway, on with this review!Gallop Racer 2004 you will most likely start out in Season Mode (which is the only thing worth playing for hours on end), where you choose you’re jockey, you’re racing silks (which you can change at AN.
With the challenge from G1 Jockey the people at Tecmo got busy on improving Gallop Racer. They’ve taking some ideas from both G1 and GR2003 and combined them. As all other horse games are, it’s very addicting. Yet with G1 you end up getting bored eventually since there is no breeding and no chances to unlock different areas or functions. I liked G1’s actual racing feel more than 2003, but GR2004 is majorly improved in that area. You can now feel the ride of the horse more in GR2004 (like in G1 Jockey). The added feel of the pumping of the horses head is a much needed improvement. Another major change in the new game is the actual use and feel of the reins. The horses are more realistic while turning (albeit more difficult and less machine like). Like all new games it takes awhile to get the timing of the “stretch spurt” down. The main thing Tecmo has taken from G1 is the fact that you have to bargain and interact with trainers for your rides. This is a very complete horse racing game. Also you can, and need to bet on races to earn extra gold (you can’t bet on races you are in). You need the extra gold to buy, and unlock other areas. GR2004 still has great graphics, and has much better “in race” sound effects. As for the Background music (while they offer a decent variety) I just found it much more enjoyable with the music all the way off. Lastly, Quarter Horse great announcer Ed Burgart gives the call! I can’t wait to get home and play some more!!!
I could not stop playing this game when I first got it!! It has great graphics, and when you’re in the pack while racing, you can actually feel the horses hooves poubding on the ground. If you don’t like racing however, this game might bore you. You can breed your champion horses also! Great game!
Satisfied
yes!!! best horse racing game,,
Some people swear by Gallop Racer 2004 and some swear by Gallop Racer 2006.This version is geared more towards jockey ability as opposed to other versions. Gallop Racer 2004 is much much easier to get Gallop Revolutions (when you ride the horse the way you’re suppose to and also use the whip at the right time on the stretch). Gallop Racer 2006 is geared more breeding and your record has no weight in decisions. How you ride your horse in Gallop Racer 2006 brings out it’s "Hidden Abilities."If you have any questions for me comment on this and I’ll try to get back to you with some info.
(I’m repeating my review of the original GR for those who happily stumbled on GR2004.)I’m a big horseracing fan and I follow the races even minus the betting. I’m also a veteran computer gamer meaning I have played countless driving and racing sims. The beauty of this game is the UNPREDICTABILITY of each race. Like in all classic racing sims from the old “Street Rod” to “Gran Turismo” the same formula is used here: Build, Race, Win, Upgrade – but with the intriguing twist of each horse’s individuality. The game itself is not so simple. As owner/trainer you must be careful to place your horse in the proper race. As jockey it’s up to you to give your mount every possible chance. Ultimately what will keep you entranced with this game is what you can’t do: In other games we “Save” before each race and “Restart Race” if we lose, being wiser from the experience; here it will be a new race each time.I recommend this game to the problem gambler going “cold turkey”, for his horseracing fix, as the action is SO real. To the uninitiated you will develop a deep understanding of why “The Sport of Kings” continues to fascinate royalty and commoner alike through the ages.
Great horse racing and breeding game! Thousands of breeding combinations, and new titles to unlock! Allows you to have multiple horses that race!
