Play tested with multiple games. This controller is a must if you have Atari games in your library. The rotary worked as it should for Breakout and other paddle games. The controller is very comfortable in hand either way you play. Played: Frogger, Centipede, River Raid and Galaga 7800, I wish this would have been what shipped with the 2600 back in the day. Also works on Atari 7800. (For 7800 one-button games only)
Love it
Excellent controller for the Retron77.
Great controller, very unique, great quality. My 2600 has never worked so well!
Works great, feels good in the had
I love the paddle/stick combo. The first thing I did was try it on Kaboom. Worked great. I had no problem moving around the maze on Ms. Pac-Man and was able to play Q-Bert one-handed and got my highest score yet. You can still hold it like a small joystick or just put your thumb on top and move it like a D-Pad. I cannot recommend it enough for retro gamers!
Great “all-in-one†controller to have on hand! Plays great in “Gamepad†mode (and you can choose if you’d prefer stick on left or right). And the spinner is smooth and responsive in “Paddle†mode.
I am giving this controller 5 stars because I love it. The Ranger has a great solid feel and nice position for the thumbstick on the controller. You can flip it around for right hand stick control if you want to try something different. You won’t have to stretch your thumb too far to the right (when the stick is positioned on the left), so that’s good. And the pad on the stick has angles on it’s outer perimeter that may give you the edge you need when it comes to hitting those diagonals. It’s really nicely designed. It also has the bonus of having a paddle on the end. It’s a bit stiff, but enables accurate analog control for the 2600 paddle games like Night Driver, G. I. Joe, Breakout, and Solar Storm (among many others). There is a paddle game it doesn’t work with and that’s Video Olympics. The stiffness problem can be fixed. There’s a topic on the Ranger in the 2600 forum on the Atariage website and someone (username ‘Fluxit’) gives advice on how to accomplish this on the 3rd page of that Ranger topic. Doing this fix improves control on Night Driver.Another thing you should know about the paddle is that in Breakout the amount you have to turn it to go from the left side of the screen to the right side is not really that far. The paddle mechanism itself, though, has a rather large total turn distance. Fortunately that large turn distance is really not a problem when playing a game because you’re not required to turn it all the way from one end’s stopping point to the o.
Great addition to our retro themed recroom. Work well with the Atari 2600. Sits comfortably in your hand while playing the games.
These are absolutely great controllers. The paddle is very responsive and smooth, without any sort of jitter on screen. The really cool feature about this controller is how it has a switch to choose between controlling with the Paddle, or switching to the stick for joystick controls, so you never have to unplug and put in a different controller for the game you’re playing. That, and it has ambidextrous switches as well, so you can play with either hand. The plastic these are made out of are heavy, and you can maneuver the cord to whatever direction you desire for comfort. It does look like a small controller, but It’s built with comfort in mind, even for my big hands.
