For being an older game I still have thoroughly enjoyed this game and with the new PS3 TW that hit stores, this still provides plenty of good entertainment.
Not a bad game to kick back and play once in a while. Still doesn’t beat the original but still is very enjoyable to play.
Notice I said "rocks" and not "is gonna rock" … where people get off reviewing a game they haven’t played yet is a bit beyond me. Twisted Metal Black banishes the horrid controls of the latter installments into the video game netherworld and brings back the glorious carnage of the earlier games. The three controller configurations should please pretty much everyone…I prefer using the directional pad over the analog stick so "Control Freak" works for me. Tight turns, sudden stops, and driving in reverse present no problem whatsoever. An excellent balance is struck where the different vehicles and weapons are concerned. Spectre and Axel seem to be a little more bothersome than the others, but no one character constantly dominates. The weapons, both character-specific and pick-up, are all useful and replenish themselves fairly quickly (a good thing, since your machine gun can get overheated). Some require a bit of practice to use, but most players won’t have much difficulty getting the hang of them. The "special" manuevers aren’t hard to pull off and, mercifully, you can no longer get away with repeatedly freezing a foe and hitting them with everything you’ve got while they can’t do anything. The same goes for your enemies; the computer scrupulously keeps track of their energy gauges and does not allow them to cheat. TMB boasts a good selection of interactive arenas in which to do battle. Usually, in video games, "interactive".
My goodness! This has to best of the series edging out TM2 in my opinion. Very fast, handles great and has a *really* fun 4 man multiplayer. There are about 15 different characters(including Sweet Tooth!) and about 11 levels for single player and 18 for multiplayer, so there is alot variety. Some levels are compact and some aremassive, like the Suburbia level for example. Dont ask me how they did it, but they made this game run at an almost perfect 60fps at all times, even with realtime weather conditions on some levels with pouring rain and heavy snow. Thats unbelievable considering all the particle explosion effects, players and landscape this title shows all on screen at once, with no noticeable fog in the background……amazing. The Soundtrack is sweet. Its very dyanamic as well. For example, when there is alot of action on screen, the music will get louder and play more riffs, but for those couple quiet moments, the music will dim down a bit and make things peaceful. It adds so much to the game, espescially i you have a Dolby Surround sound system. The destruction and speed of this game compliments this series really well, taken to the next level with the better technology obviously. The particle effects are amazing and the maneuvers, handling and physics are extremely polished. It is a little difficult but not enough to get frustrated, well maybe sometimes, but definitely challenging. Thankfully there are cheats you can use if its gets too hard. The multiplayer is also.
This game is absolutely addictive to play. The game is definately intense and fast paced, and compared to older TM games is quite a bit more difficult. I would definately recommend this game as it is alot of fun to play. Getting the secret characters and levels proves to be a real challenge. Also, with a about 15 different cars, all with different handeling and physics, there is plenty of reply value here. Additionally, I love the fact that the levels are interactive and that they can be destroyed or manipulated. My only complaints about this game is that there is a very steep learning curve. The game is very fast and the controls are quite difficult to get used to, especially if you play other driving games. Secondly, it can occasionally get annoying when all of your enemies gang up on you, all the skill in the world wont help you here.Just as a warning, the game is rated M and is quite a bit darker and more violent than past TM games, which in my opinion makes it far better as I hate when games are dumbed down for kids. The graphics on this game are great, the levels are impeccably created and designed. They frequent use of the black/grey/brown color pallets give the atmosphere are dark seedy feel which is awesome. The music itself isnt bad, I generally tend to keep the music of games pretty low as I am an MVC2 fan and as many of you know the music to that game is an atrocity. Finally in my experiance, if I am playing more than one game consecutively in a day, I try no.
This was a gift for my son but he in turn gave it as a gift to his cousin. They love to play this game and wants me to order more for them. The price was very reasonable.
Twisted Metal, How can you go wrong
I was a huge fan of Twisted Metal 2, it was a phenomenal game, so I had high hopes when I heard the same crew was working on the new incarnation of this game for the PS2. Well needless to say I wasn’t disappointed. The story mode for the main characters is maniacal to the point of frightening. Twisted Metal has always been, well, twisted, but these guys certainly outdid themselves this time. Brimstone and Spectre’s story were the best in my opinion. Now into the level design, you couldn’t get more perfect for the game. The environments are expansive, gorgeous, and fully destructable, which is always good in this type of game. My personal favourites being Suburbs and The Prison Ship. They were both huge levels and fun to play. Overall the game is simply fantastic, the learning curve is awesome. You can play right from the get go, but as you hone your skills you can get downright awesome with combos of great driving skills and blowing your competitors to bits as you go along. If you like a game with great action and beautiful level and vehicle/character design then this is the game for you. Provided of course you aren’t afraid of rampant death and destruction. Check it out, it’s great game.
The first impression I had of this game wasn’t very good. The graphics looked sub-par, and I couldn’t hit anything. I just started and got creamed in the first level. The learning curve of such of game was too intense. Car combat is so simple, why should it take a while to get used to it? Anyway, with no advancement and no visual aesthetics, I quickly dismissed this game.Fortunately, I came back to it. I grew accustomed to the drab, gray graphics, I figured out some strategy, and I switched the difficulty to easy. What happened amazed me. This game which I thought was terrible turned out to be pretty good. You get to choose between around 12 different characters. Each character pretty much goes through the same levels, so once you’ve been through a few characters, you’ve seen all the levels in the game. Each character controls another car, and more importantly, gives you a cool movie describing his or her ordeal. These movies are what make the game. Though very, very short (nothing close to Final Fantasy X), these little 30-second clips are disturbing, intense, dark, and simply amazing. The credits, with a montage of the various cut scenes played to Rolling Stone’s “Fade to Black” is worth the price of this relatively inexpensive game alone.Even though the graphics could have been better, and the game easier, playing a few characters is worth it. Though I would love to see all the movies, the game gets pretty repetitive. Despite these flaws, I recommend this game..
Talk to any hardcore “Twisted Metal” fan, and they’ll say two things: the first two games were excellent, and the next two were terrible, which can be attributed to the fact that the series changed hands between different developers. So when the original developers were brought back to the series, they decided to do one thing: rebuild the genre of vehicular combat from scratch. The end result is “Twisted Metal: Black”, a darker, more sinister version of its Playstation cousins. But it’s all for the best, because “TM:B” has to be the best game in the “Twisted Metal” series and one of the must-have titles of the Playstation2.There is a reason why this game has the subtitle “Black” attached to it. “TM:B” is one of those games that doesn’t just meet the requirements of an M-rated title; it lives up to it. Themes found in this game include homicide, depression, suicide, self-mutilation, medical malpractice, and physical abuse. Don’t believe me? Watch any of the game’s characters’ opening sequences (particularly Sweet Tooth’s), and you’ll understand why this game belongs in the same category as “Grand Theft Auto III”.But the shock factor isn’t just for show. The stories of all the twisted, demented characters are deep and powerful, giving them depth and personality. A player actually wants to help his chosen character win, actually wants his character to defeat all the other characters so that Calypso, the mysterious host of the Twisted Metal tournaments, can grant the winner what.
