The Good: Colorful art style, solid controls and platforming, memorable characters, fun mini-games, gameplay makes you feel like a sneaky thiefThe Bad: A bit short, one hit and you’re dead, some frustrating spots, cheap deathsI am not sure why I passed this game up all these years, but I am sad that I did. Finally being able to play it, I realize just how well it stands up today. Sly Cooper and his gang are trying to retrieve the Thievius Raccoonus which is a book of secrets passed on from thief to thief in Sly’s family. The evil Clockwerk and several of his henchmen stole a page each, and it is up to you to get them back. The first thing you will notice about the game is how well it controls. The movement is buttery smooth with great platforming and gameplay mechanics. Sly can double jump, but his main mechanic is his cane. He can use it to swing around and attack, but there are also ways to sneak around like a thief that just feel really whimsical. When you see blue sparkles on ledges you can hold circle and sneak around them. When Sly moves around a sneaking sound plays instead of footsteps which is really neat. This also goes for poles and other areas to climb. Just jump near it and hold circle and Sly will cling on. This mechanic is very well done and makes platforming a lot of fun. Combat is pretty simple where you just whack away with your cane and all enemies die in one hit. This isn’t as easy as you think because you die in one hit too. There are traps and obstacles.
Love this game SO much! Tons of fun for all ages. Runs great, arrived on time and was packed properly.
Good
Worked just fine, childhood game to bring back and speedrun restored
I played this game as a kid at a friend’s house. He was a control hog, so I never got to truly play it all myself until the trilogy collection came out on ps3.I do own that collection on my ps3, and it is wonderful, with the higher res and redone music and all, but there is a major thing that is missing that was there in the original: the developer commentary when you defeat the time sprints in levels. It was removed in the collection and while I can access it all online, i wanted to earn it for myself. Take that Brody, my town now.As for the actual game:The first entry of the Sly series is the odd one out. It plays like a typical 1-hit KO platformer, only it’s in 3d and has nice branching paths here and there as you look for collectibles. Sly can do a lot of athletic feats, and you unlock more as you progress.A lot of levels are a point A to B, where you have to navigate them to reach your goal, the treasure keys. Every level feels unique and fits the world’s themes though, so it’s hard to get bored. Some levels even switch it up where it feels more like a side scroller, while others keep you moving as platforms get destroyed. Each world has a level or two that’s a little different, like racing, turret shooting, or whacking chickens in a small space. The story is one that really fits Saturday morning cartoons. Sly is from a long line of master thieves, and as a kid an evil gang stole his family heirloom and left him orphaned. Now grown up, Sly seeks to take back what’s rightf.
Most platformers today are more or less the same. Same ideas, same objectives with the same old cliche’s. Sly Cooper is about to break that trend. Make no mistake, it does share similarities with various platformers, but it adds enough depth and play mechanics to seperate itself from the pack while still remainng quite fun. The game revolves alot around stealth, ala MGS, but fuses it together with platformer elements. Instead of jumping around mindlessly as in most platformers, Sly makes you think just what is the best route to get to a certain objective, as there will often be diffrent traps and other enemies or the like but there is always different routes to take rather than a set path for every objective. Each path will vary on difficulty and strategy. It might me to jump into a barrel and tip toe around an enemy or radar, or perhaps scurry up a high wire, or maybe swing from rope to rope. There are plenty of various situations where different skills or tactics will be needed, so everything does not become monotonous. Thankfully, the game itself handles wondefully, with very fluid and responsive control. Sly himself has diffrent abilities such as jumping, rolling, running, and and uses his odd-shaped cane as his primary ‘weapon’. There are also your typical coin collecting for extra lives and you can also collect a few bottles in each level, to unlock a secret move for Sly to have at his desposure. So the little collecting there is in the game is quite rewarding. Another.
There was nothing that I disliked about this game from the time I turned it on. This is the game that got me hook to Sly. I had them for the first PlayStation and when I got the PS2 I went out and got them for that system also. Great game, Just love, love, love it I still to this day paly them. I also purchase the last game that came out last year.
Its a wonderful game that I enjoy every time I play. Its a bit difficult but the challenge is worth it.
You simply cannot go wrong with a Sly Cooper game; the 3D-platforming style is a blast from the past unto itself and Sucker Punch Productions surely knew what they were doing when they crafted this masterpiece!
The game is fun when you are Sly going through levels, but there are some game levels you have to pass to move forward that I do not like.
