Many years ago my roomate bought a Sega Genesis, and since I had no real interest in the games he had for it I usually was content with my Nintendo. Then one day he brought Starflight in. From that day I was hooked for months on end. The premise is straightforward: You’re the captain of an Interstel (A corporation that runs Arth’s starships) exploring vessel. You select a crew among 5 different races, all with thier own unique traits and proficiencies, and send them out to go discover the universe. Along the way the major plot of the game is uncovered…solar flares are erupting all along the coreward fringes of space and they’re slowly heading in the general direction of your planet, Arth. Needless to say that investigating the flares themselves (the solution to which will shock you by games’ end) and encountering a dozen different alien species, strange artifacts and a simply mindboggling amount of planets, well there’s not a lack of something to do throughout the game. With money made by the selling of mineral deposits you can upgrade your ship for fights with some of the more hostile denizens of the universe. My roomate took his copy with him long ago leaving me with nothing except fond memories of this fantastic game. It prompted me to buy the PC version of Starflight 2: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula and play that into the ground as well. If you’re a fan of Master of Orion or even better StarControl I + II, this game is a *must* have.
I have to say this game is a little know, yet was a milestone in gaming. it is among the quintessential games that introduced resource management/open world gaming. I thought it was innovating, whether you were having an exchange with aliens/space battles/exploring planets and mining resources, After I mined all I could it’s back to headquarter with all your spoils tote using what I earned to upgrade my spaceship. Doing all this and somehow fight the clock to find away to prevent total destruction. It’s underrated, retro and worth a buy.
This game takes me back to that feeling of “space exploration”, back in the day when you had some graphics on-screen but you still had to use your imagination. If you played this one back in the day of the early console and PC games, it will be a nice nostalgia trip for you.
I liked that it worked perfectly. One of the top ten genesis games
…can’t imagine the game is that different. I first discovered this game back around 1990 or so (can’t remember exactly), and it blew my (then) tiny little mind. It’s a fairly open-ended space RPG, almost sandbox-like in playstyle. You control the captain & crew of an Interstel Star Ship as they explore the galaxy with an eye towards ending the mysterious solar flares threatening your homeworld. Along the way you have to make money, find (or purchase) fuel, upgrade your ship & train your crew. There are several different alien races to interact with–some friendly, others notsomuch (like many others, I still have fond memories of the Spemin). You can be a hero or a villain, matters not. Discover lost alien artifacts–and if you’re REALLY lucky, you might even discover a world long lost to the mists of time & legend: Earth. Find the source of the solar flares before time runs out, or your world will be destroyed! The graphics are old-school EGA (of the CGA/EGA/VGA triad), but it doesn’t matter. You’ll have a blast cruising around between solar systems, dodging Uhlek & picking on Spemin in no time! I can’t recommend this game enough!
Good
1000s of hours as a kid. Playing it again at 41 and sharing it with my son.
You come upon an abandoned spaceship in deep space. Or so it seems. This game allows you to travel in deep space and encounter unknown beings and is truly lonely and encapsulates the expanses of outer space.
Mass Effect 2 meets Mount & Blade
Works great. Good shop.
