The discs come in plastic snap cases. The discs play fine. The first five seasons had swinging plastic pages to hold the discs. The sixth season stacked all of the discs on a single plastic peg.Downton Abbey captivated me for several seasons. It was different, unlike any other series I was watching. I enjoyed the entire series and plan on rewatching the show. The locations and scenery and likable characters were great. It’s not without its flaws. For instance, in the fourth season I was wondering what Thomas’ job was. All he does is stand around, spying on people. Is he the spymaster? In season five I found some of the situations and characters tedious and boring. But overall I liked the series very much.If you’re looking for good stuff to watch consider miniseries like The Astronauts Wives Club (2015), Band of Brothers (2001), Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000), Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune (2003), Into the West (2005), Lonesome Dove (1989), Manhattan (2014-2015), Return to Lonesome Dove (1993), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Taken (2002) and The 10th Kingdom (2000), which are all terrific because they have clear beginnings that establish an objective, then strong middles and conclusive endings where the goal is achieved, like a good novel.Other shows I’ve really enjoyed include Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Breaking Bad (2008-2013), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Firefly (2002), Game of Thrones (2011-2019), Granite Flats (2013-2015), The IT Crowd (2006-2013), Jericho (2006-2008), Merli.
Season 5 of DA continued along the series’ merry way. Lady Mary playing both nice girl/b*****, the Earl basically clueless, Thomas the footman/underbutler still a nasty piece of work but people still trust him (?), and Bates and Anna always one foot in the dark dungeon of law — just a bit contrived. I’m a middling fan of Downton Abbey — not because it’s not good, but basically I’ve seen it all before. Not a single plot device not seen in the original Upstairs Downstairs. That’s not to take anything away from the writing or the acting. It is well worth sitting through any number of plot-retreads for the scenes between Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton (Harriet Jones in Dr. Who — "yes, we know who you are"). It does become clear during this series that the "family" still wields considerable power over others "below" them, regardless of morals, ethics, or feelings. Will they ever get their comeuppance or be made to atone? Probably not.
Outstanding program. Great character development. Love the show, but must admit, I find myself laughing at the absurdity of it all. Women getting bent out of shape if their "lady’s maid" is not available. Everything in their lives is scripted- changing to formal "dinner" clothes every night, , tea only in the library at tea time, needing butlers standing around in the dining room in case they need something. These people don’t do ANYTHING for themselves. Their children spend much of the time with nannies and only see their parents for a short time each day. The snobbery is disturbing and very overt. Jealousy reigns. God forbid if one relative marries to a more titled man than another! My favorite character was Tom- the chauffeur who married the Earl’s daughter. He is a very down to earth guy who is now part of the family, but still is able to maintain much of his "true self". Interestingly, he’s an admitted Socialist- the antithesis of the the family into which he married. The cast is stellar, whether their character is nice or mean. You really believe them to be who they play. The characters are really brought to life. Don’t miss this series!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING: Not only does this show have drama is teaches about a time in history that seems to get over looked – just before WW1 and the time after but before WW2. The show is a never ending coasted of ups and downs but not like most shows that scare the mess out of you. No, Downton Abbey does it what feels like a more elegant manner. The writer – Julian Fellows – does a magnanimous job with the flow of time in this period drama; rather than feed the audience all the information the show will skip ahead passing what some one want to know about. While the show drops clues and information tidbits to fill you in, really focusing on the point of the story rather than being drown by the minutiae. Lastly the take away benefit of watching this show is the personal development of your own character; you watch this show and begin to take on a new prioity in your life, a standard of living you begin to see is not "better than them" but more so "better for you" and your personal well being while not become a snob or anything of the sort.
It was okay. They did a good enough job of tying up loose ends in the story. Kind of hard to put on the brakes when the story is so captivating one just wants to keep on peeping in on the drama of these characters and their fascinating lifestyles. I had a hard time letting the story stop right where it was.I’m disappointed in retrolio Prime streaming. This episode of Downton Abbey was my first video streamed from retrolio Prime. I opted for Standard Definition instead of HD, which resulted in a very poor viewing experience. Netflix streams without any trouble and even PBS videos from the PBS website stream with crystal clarity on my HP ENVY DV6 laptop, but this episode streamed in the most blurry fashion, I felt that every scene I watched had been captured on film by a camera with a dirty lens. Luckily I had only missed the end of the it so I only watched the last 20 minutes. I have to say for me it was a bit sad to say goodbye to Downton Abbey’s last episode with such a poor quality video. But I got the gist of it. Just missed out on seeing everything clearly.
Spoiler alert if you have not seen this series!The entire character of the show emits a pleasing ambiance, imagination transports [us] to being the proprietors of a beautiful estate in rural England and all that goes with it. It is easy to get wrapped up in the characters and to even have compassion for the connivers. Although I cannot truly say that the show is a mature presentation of reality it does make an effort in that direction. The show is good entertainment and I do not feel that I am wasting time watching it. (Spoiler alert) When Matthew, who was Mary’s husband was killed in season 2 or 3 (sorry memory) we really felt sad. From a viewers perspective, this was a real blow to the series, but they did recover nicely. The family matriarch played by Maggie Smith is awesome, she makes the qualities I most dislike in people somehow embraceable. I’ll miss it when it ends.
Downton Abbey follows the lives of an Earl’s family and servants in England starting in 1912 and moving into the 1920s. It subtly covers the impact of major sociological changes through the everyday lives of these people, with heart and flair. Season 5 is no exception, however I will say it is a gentler season in some ways, in that the writers obviously took steps to prepare the viewer for things that in previous seasons they were willing to blind-side them with (if you regularly watch it, you know what I mean.) The costumes and sets are deliciously beautiful as ever, the discussion often witty, the storyline moving, the education enlightening. Of course I recommend it, who wouldn’t?
Downtown Abbey Season 5 continued to surpass expectations with plot twists and turns, absolutely spot on characterizations, and plenty is snarky comments from the Dowager. It’s too hard to discuss characters without spoiling things for those streamers who haven’t seen it, but watch for Edith’s continuing heartbreak, Tom’s contemplating his future, Robert’s suspicions, Rose’s new father-in-law, and major twists and turns for Bates and Anna and Carson and Mrs. Hughes, just to name a few. And as always, everyone upstairs and downstairs is a genuinely decent human being (with the exception of Barrow, naturally).Bottom line…as the title says, Masterpiece’s very best just keeps getting better.
As a 31 year old dude, I found myself getting pulled into watching this with my family. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. You would think that watching a show full of somewhat snooty, rich English people being served hand and foot by the lower helping class of Butlers and Cooks would be boring-some or hard to watch, but the character drama and interactions very much intrigue you and draw you in. The rich folks have their share of problems and family drama which helps us relate, and the whole swarm of Butlers, maids, footman and cooks find a pride in what they do that shows you they actually enjoy their jobs and are taken well care of. All in all, I found it very enjoyable to watch, and the episodes are just long enough to enjoy 1 or 2 in an evening. I jumped into this show at the beginning of Season 4 and watched it up to its current stop at Season 5 with little difficulty, and was caught up by family on past events.I guarantee that most women and men will thoroughly enjoy this series. It does have a lot of drama and romance, but there are plenty of aspects that make it fun for guys to watch too. It is an extremely clean show, no swear words, no nudity, and all in all good clean fun.
Indulged in a marathon of watching all of the later episodes in the season now that they are online. Great season, Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton are priceless together, loved Tom and Edith’s different story lines. Loved Rose too, she has become a more well rounded character and I only hope she does not vanish completely into her new life. Mary is the only real weak point for me, because I find her so frosty to everyone, but we have yet another romantic possibility looming to add to the excitement.Finally, what can we say about Anna and Bates the star-crossed lovers? Waiting for them to be happy! Barrow starts doing the right thing, with astonishing results. The good doctor is wonderful as ever-love David Robb and wish he had a bit more to do.Molesley turns from mildly amusing to hero this season, yay for him, and new character Sue Johnston as Denker was a real hoot, especially with Sprat. Feel sorry for Lord Merton; some great scenes and I would love to see more of him! A winner of a season and am now eagerly awaiting the next one.
