I’ve never had a hand held video game. I’ve never been too big on computer games either, but since I first heard about Brain Age type games for the Nintendo DS I have wanted one. I thought it was too expensive on my low fixed income so I just wouldn’t buy it.Then I kept reading about how as we age it is so important to challenge our brains. I have an illness that causes me cognative problems to begin with. So at 52 yrs old I finally decided to just do it. When I saw that $ would go to Breast Cancer Research I knew I had to get this color. It is really pretty. I like pink but the pink ones seemed more for little girls, this is just right.I am very surprised and happy at the quality of the unit. The screen is so easy to see and very bright. I got two games to start with. Brain Challenge and Flash Focus. I was shocked at what my scores were. Yikes I should have got it a lot sooner. Both games are a challenge for me. I wish the coaches actually talked instead of the music in the background but other than that I think these two are a great start.I am glad I went ahead and got it even though I had considered it a luxury now I consider it physical therapy and a medical need.I didn’t want some big unit to sit in my living room taking up space, I hate clutter. This is nice and small and I can take it with me, especially to doctor’s apts, when I have to wait long periods of time.If you have been holding off go ahead. I don’t think you will be sorry. I heard a new one is coming out.
Had the same problem everyone else did with completely destroying the outer packaging to get to the DS Lite and the Zelda Game.I guess it was made intentionally that way as a counter-measure to theft. There was an incident in recent news where a PS3 was pilfered from the box, then resealed with a phone book in its place. Who knows what happened to that one, either employee theft, transit theft, or theft – then returned. In either case, we were otherwise happy with the DS Lite Console… as well as the Zelda game. We’re also not big on games where you have to blow into the microphone (e.g. the Diego DS game, Dora the Explorer, etc…) It’s an otherwise good game, the Triforce logo doesn’t hurt it either. I would actually buy another one if they were in-stock.
I got the Nintendogs game and DS for my 7 year old daughter for Christmas. She absolutely loved the little paw on the front and has a lot of fun with the game. The dogs in the game are very realistic for a video game and kids have the opporutnity to train their dog and teach it tricks, feed it, etc. It responds to petting (rubbing its head with the DS stylus) by rolling over for more rubs on its belly. Really very cute and fun for the kids. I even got into throwing the virtual frisbee to teach the puppy to fetch. I would highly recommend this package. My daughter still tells me how much she loves her DS.
I think the concept of the brain age games is really cool — but a bit like some quickie IQ tests, you seem to quickly learn to think like the game! Not sure if it really helps make us any sharper — or speed up any synapses to make my mind feel youthful…. but I do feel better prepared to play more games.I’m wondering what else will come out for the Nintendo DS that will challenge us?Certainly recommend getting the bundled kit like this — save $$ :-)
My daughter had been asking for her DS since she turned 5, but we made her wait. I thought 6 was still going to be to young, but she has since proved me wrong. In fact we will probably be buying one for our 4 year old for Christas. You just have get the right games. She loves The Build a Bear game, and her Barbie Equestrian game. The Looney Toons Game is proving to be a bit to hard though…I would absolutely reccomend the DS for ages 5 to 105!
My five star rating is for the DS itself. The four star rating is for the bundle of the crimson/black DS, Brain Age 2, and case. This DS is very good looking; however, the glossy red top will show fingerprints. The matte black bottom is good because it’s less likely to slip in your hands, as another reviewer stated. I don’t use a screen protector, but I haven’t noticed any scratches yet, and I use the stylus a lot. I can’t yet attest to its durability, since I’ve only had it three months and have yet to drop it.The case isn’t really that great. Its main advantages are that it looks sort of like a woman’s wallet, and the DS can be played while in the case, though that’s a little awkward. The disadvantage is that the DS isn’t completely covered by the case as it would be with other cases on the market, so dirt and liquids could get into the sides and damage the DS. The case isn’t so nice that it would be mistaken for leather, either. Also, the game pockets on it are very tight, as other reviewers have noted. The Brain Age 2 game is not as entertaining as I thought it might be. The “Dr. K” stuff on it is sometimes intrusive and often annoying. I’ve used it for only a few weeks and have already almost gotten my “brain age” down to the optimal 20.At $149.99, this was a pretty good deal.
Great game system.
The red top is glossy and feels glossy, the black bottom is painted flat and feels flat also, it’s a very different texture, almost like unpolished wood. It’s no different than the original ds lites in any way except the texture and the color. The game that comes with it, the Brain Age 2 , is great and the thing that i think people will like is that it comes in spanish and french also, so that people who want to play with their non-american families can play.
With a bright screen, good ergonomics, decent battery life, and the ability to share games with others, the DS Lite is an excellent choice for a portable gaming system. The ability to have multiple players participate in the same game without having to pony up for each player to have a copy is awesome! What a concept! The Legend of Zelda game that comes with the DS Lite Gold is also a lot of fun to play. One of the few nits is that this system does not support WPA security and while it does support WEP, it doesn’t seem to be able to connect if you have the SSID hidden on your WAP. Other than that, this is a great system.
My daughter received this for Christmas. She had asked Santa for a pink DS with a Nintendogs game. When she saw this bundle packages, she screamed. She loves the metallic rose color. She didn’t even know this color existed. The game is a little difficult to figure out for kids new to the handheld gaming systems. She had never played an Game boy before. Her more experienced 12 yr old cousin couldn’t figure out this “best friends” version either. He has the regular nintendogs. Finally found a friend who figured out the game & now she love’s it.
