Got it as a gift for a friend, they loved it
This book is a brilliant, eloquent account of a life lived in activism. Kaur writes with so much courage and clarity about topics that defeat lesser writers or shunt them into cliches. She narrates her own experiences of toppling a racist police department, grieving with her community in the wake of mass shootings (the oft-forgotten Oak Creek massacre of August 2012 that occurred within a gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) in Wisconsin), and surviving assaults. Kaur is not just the sum of these wounds though – she has been a mighty advocate and voice. She draws on the wisdom of midwives and the warrior tradition within her own Sikh faith to urge us to “see no stranger” as we reimagine the world around us.It’s a powerful book of moral guidance for troubled times like those we live in now, carried forward on wisdom from many other midwives and many other generations. If you value writing that has personal, political, and spiritual dimensions all at once this book will rock your world and give you new strength and inspiration to “breathe and push.” I wept openly while reading it and have bought copies for my friends and family – it feels that meaningful and important.
I was mesmerized. I could not put this book down. As an American Muslim woman, I could deeply relate to the struggles and challenges Valarie described. From early childhood to personal relationships to social issues. As Valarie shared her journey to healing, I felt a part of me heal as well.Thank you for sharing your story and offering with the world. We really need it in this moment in history. It could not have arrived at a better time. I hope to heal the broken parts of our society through revolutionary love and seeing *absolutely* no stranger… until every innocent person is free from discrimination, racial profiling, and unjust policing.
I had never heard of Valarie Kaur before reading this memoir, but she is a renowned Sikh activist, filmmaker, and civil rights lawyer. She’s also incredibly thoughtful, insightful, and impressively understanding toward people who are different from her. It took me a while to finish See No Stranger because it is heavy—beautifully written and straight up breathtaking, no exaggeration—but, good grief, she covers some tough subjects. Not only does she discuss her personal experiences with racism and sexual assault (she grew up with her Sikh family in the farmland of white-washed central California). But she also describes her years as a law student observing “life†at Guantánamo Bay and later fighting for prison reform, as well as her years as an activist helping communities recover from brutal acts of violence fueled by xenophobic prejudice. The deep level of hate she describes in this book is damn near unbearable to read, especially given our current political climate. But her message to stay open, to commit to an attitude of “wonder,†especially when interacting with people who are (often extremely) different from us is powerful. When she describes speaking to the guards at Guantánamo Bay, specifically to one guard who inconceivably complains that the prisoners have more freedom than he does, and then forcing herself to not shut down and judge, but instead ask questions to understand his point of view, was incredible. Inspirational.“You are a part of me that I don’t yet know†i.
A lovely written memoir that is more a guide to navigating these difficult times. Loved it so much I bought copies for friends! Consider supplementing this with the website she also has and webinars. Truly inspirational to have a guide on how to walk towards others with understanding and compassion, even when their views or opinions might be vastly different than your own.
Thought provoking, inspiring, and brilliant! Valarie’s stories brought tears, shame, rage, wonder, and of course joy. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling to understand their own white privilege and are willing to hear another perspective on how to view their place in our collective humanity.
Raw, honest, loving, transformative. I will read this book again and again and let it transform me each time.
This was a powerful read and definitely puts perspective on current political events.
Eat and drink of this wisdom, it will nourish your heart and inspire your will! It is a profound blessing!
Thoughtful, academically rigorous, and heartfelt, See No Stranger is required reading for 2020 and beyond. I received this book at a time when the world seems to be falling apart and beyond repair. Kaur’s offering provides a way forward. Understanding love as an ethic, an action, and a practice is a concept I did not understand until I read this book. The narrative is story-telling at its best. The concepts are powerful, actionable tools that have changed how I view the world around me and within me.
