The movie finally makes sesse! My husband had watched the movie version so many times, and I tried to watch with him. I couldn’t follow the story. Now, all the gaps are filled in and I can understand it! They made a big injustice to the storyline and the actors rror editing this movie and releasing it like they did. **Be sure to purchase the correct version. Not just the DVD version, but the directors cut!
Much better than the theater version! Makes a lot more sense of the characters and the story.
If you think you know this movie from watching it on TV think again. The directors cut and Blu-ray quality makes this the best version of an already great film. The epic view of a terrible time in history is well acted and beautifully produced. Aside from the unfortunate fact that religious conflict is the bane of mans existence, this movie is well worth owning.
There are a decent number of medeival style movies out there and some are pretty darned good. Well, this is certainly one of them and the Directors cut is the correct version to watch and/or own since the theatrical version is mediocre at best. The D-Cut adds a solid amount of character development and really sets the stage for why people act the way they do and this is important in any movie but especially so in such a grand epic tale. The added scenes/footage were both neccessary and very well edited as if they were there the whole time. I really enjoyed the extra time given to the prevalent back-stories and setups. Props to Ridley Scott on this version. The storyline is very well done and doesnt have any major holes in it. Balian DOES become a rather good swordsman after just a few lessons but that doesn’t mean that the movie is bad. Otherwise, he is very believable and you do actually care about his fortunes as the film goes on. He is trying to do the right thing and is facing resistence all around him…. its a very tough situation to be in and he handles it pretty well. I wouldnt say he is William Wallace material or anything, but he gets the job done. Ed Nortons unaccredited role as the King with Leprocy is fantastic and I really felt for this guy…he had dreams and big plans for life but they will be cut short due to his disease. He takes it VERY well and this makes you care even more. Gassan Massoud(sp?) who played Saladin was terrific and quite convincing as a m.
One might think Randall Wallace did the screenplay for Kingdom of Heaven. After taking the flack for the multitude of blatant inaccuracies for Braveheart, he made the in-your-face statement that history should never get in the way of a good script. Ridley Scott and William Monahan took that to heart! Despite what the script calls for, blacksmiths didn’t just up and become knights in the Middle Ages. But that is a small sin, a foreboding of things to come. The battle was not at Jerusalem, but a city known as Hattin (clue – it was called the Battle of Hattin for some reason…lol). At one point in the movie, Saladin’s sister is killed to tick him off – as if he isn’t ticked enough already? ¯this didn’t take place. His sister was never killed. Sigh. Before you can blink, you are knee-deep in stereotypical Christians. We are treated with “cute” soundbites of the Kingdom of Heaven still being disputed, speeches that would have never been uttered during this period and an all too simple Hollywood style wrapped up ending. So, park any historical interest at the door. Did you REALLY expect anything different from Hollywood? The Costumes are wonderful, the lensing of the whole thing is stunning from start to finish. Orlando is finally easing out of the teen mode and into manhood. He looks good, though really needed to reach deeper than his Legolas mode to pull out this performance. Still, I don’t fault him for never delivering the knock out punch his character should have.
Great movie and purchased from goodwill via retrolio.
The director’s cut was great because it eliminated all the confusion of the theatrical release. I had seen it on TV but much of it didn’t make sense especially the attack where the uncle is mentioned plus Sibella’s role, etc. I liked the extras which gave an insight into how Scott worked and also lots of detail on the costumes and how the digital additions were done. A couple to minuses were that Scott kept talking about what would have happened in North Africa (where he shot the film) and not in Jerusalem which is not in North Africa. Also I think there was a mistake in the dialogue when the patriarch of Jerusalem says the bodies can’t be burned: Bodies that are burned cannot be resurrected until Judgement Day. All bodies cannot be resurrected until Judgement Day. Believe this should have read “cannot be resurrected on Judgement Day.”
Really interesting movie about the Crusades; also enjoyed watching the special features with History Channel showing what is myth and what was true to life. Inspiring film, pretty accurate to Crusades at the time, and features a very strong cast — Liam Neeson, Orlando Bloom, Edward Norton, Jeremy Irons, Eva Green. Definitely recommend it.
This is the definitive version, I have watched the theatrical version and its not even in the same ballpark as the directors cut. This version is an amazing film. I am convinced that if this version were released in theaters it would have done so much better business and gotten much better reviews. If you love historical dramas (not documentaries) then you will love this film
Loved the movie, gave a good representation of both faiths, and taught me a lot about the Crusades. Recommended.
