Read Batman Eternal and Arkham Manor before reading this one. It adds a much needed build before you get to Endgame. This is a great book, as most Joker stories are. I do think "Death of the Family" (Batman Vol 3) was a much more intense and psychologically unsettling Joker tale, but Endgame is great in terms of a bigger picture and how it affects all of Gotham. Snyder sure has destroyed or terrorized that poor city a bunch in this Batman series. Another great book in an incredible Batman line. Snyder and Capullo have done great work.
Without giving too much away (I don’t want to spoil anything here for someone who hasn’t read this arc yet, because it’s a truly enjoyableread), I’ll just give some thoughts I’ve jotted down after having just finished reading this story for the first time here in trade:-Snyder overindulges perhaps too much in symbolism. He also crams a lot into a six-issue story here. Not all of it works, but most of it does. From what I understand, the fallout of this arc is still a mystery of sorts in the current issues.-The work here by the entire art team–Capullo, Miki and FCO–is both visceral and outstanding. Greg Capullo is without a doubt one of the top Bat-artists of all time.-Not quite the grand guignol-level of horror of the last Joker arc by the team, "Death of the Family", but it’s plenty close at times.-The take on the Joker here as "the Pale Man" takes on seriously haunting mythological proportions, and stands along some of the best of the many interpretations of the character. This truly feels like it’s on another level than the standard monthly superhero fare. Highly recommended.
amazing read! you’ll be crazy when your done reading this.. terribly frightening story.100% RECOMMENDED!
Out of all the new 52 stories, Batman is easily my favorite. Wonderfully written and beautifully drawn. It’s aesthetically pleasing in so many ways, their attention to detail and understanding of Batman’s story arc is what separates them from others who have tried to bring Batman to life before.
Just…..Bravo. *Tear falls from eye.
This is one of my favorite Batman/Joker stories and this hardcover edition is just perfect.
Snyder and Capullo consistently outdo themselves with every single arc they put together. This will go down in history as one of the best of all time, as will Zero Year, Death of the Family, and Court of Owls. Which is, to date, every paperback they’ve released so far, so that’s really saying something about my opinion on this team.If you aren’t reading (starting with volume 1) do yourself and a favor and pick this series up immediately. Even if you aren’t really a fan of Batman, if you’re a fan of comics you’ll truly love this.It really grabs your attention and forces you to read more when Batman comes under attack from the Justice League, he uses his Justice Buster armor. Not much story or flesh to that…it’s purely cinematic but is the precursor to the main story. An exciting thrill ride through the Joker’s final game. He’s realized Batman isn’t his friend, or never was… or that he’s tired of trying to "help" Batman in his own twisted and sick way… he aims to kill him. For real this time.Once it starts, it never stops. So dedicate a full hour or two of your time to reading this all the way through in one sitting, trust me when I say you will NOT want to put this book down.
One of the best batman stories ever. It is definitely an instant classic!
Scott Snyder is a masterful story teller who displays his writing prowess in the best Joker epic since Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke. Snyder concludes his Joker cycle that he set up in the first 2 volumes and set in full motion by volume 3. I am so impressed with his writing and Greg Capullo’s artwork is stunning and gritty as ever. I highly recommend this caper for the ages about the Caped Crusader. Gotham has never appeared more dire and realistic. Snyder gives Joker a new purpose…
Brilliant
