Maybe I’m old fashioned. I used to love the original TV series, and I even enjoyed Ang Lee’s film. But with all of the hate that’s been around concerning this film, I’ve dragged my feet in wanting to view it. Well, I just finished it, and, you know, for a comic book film, this isn’t bad. Not at all.Is it the best Marvel film? No. Is it the worst? Not even close. It’s shot well, the story is good, though there is a few loose ends at the end not wrapped up. But the story of the scientist cursed with this failed experiment, constantly trying to find peace and not to harm anyone, is very strong in this film. The ending could be refined, but on the whole, don’t believe the hate. It’s a good installment in the Avengers set up.
Wow the DTS-X sound track alone makes this worth buying again – you get so much more in the crystal clear sound department – I’m rocking – 7.2.4 sound on a Denon 6500 and this movie is truly well done in sound and picture – absolutely worth upgrading you old dvd to this 4K copy
The action was amazing, the scripting was outstanding, but what really resonated with me was the “moral of the story”. Power corrupts – and the greater the power, the greater the potential for corruption.Dr. Bernstein is a very sympathetic character – he didn’t ask for this power and he tried to get rid of it. But, ultimately, he tamed his terrible anger and power to use for it good – to destroy a hulk far more powerful than he who had only evil intent.Glad I got in on the Marvel Avenger’s series, albeit just a bit late.
Good and pretty underrated MCU film. I think the problem here is that it was made by Universal and not Paramount/Disney. At least, that’s what I feel is what fans see (I’m not wasting space here explaining the reason for separate studios but it can easily be found here or online elsewhere). It’s true that it’s not groundbreaking. Most of the actual Avengers films are better, but then the series was built for those. The individual films are more introductions but overall everything is focused towards the team universe. They’re not Iron Man films or Thor films. They’re Avengers films. Think about it. With that said, this one actually plays very well as its own piece where the others have a connecting feel (again more due to it being a different studio). I think the drama, romance, and action are well executed. I mean this isn’t an Oscar contender in that manner but neither are the other films. The FX are top notch, especially since this type of film would’ve been less so just years before, so THAT is definitely a plus. Ed Norton channels the old TV show’s Banner (Bill Bixby) and does quite well, Bill Hurt is a viable nemesis, and Tim Roth is quite dastardly (something he has down to a science). Due to the separate studios, there’s never been another true Hulk film in the series – well, though “Thor: Ragnarok†is technically a Thor-Hulk team-up – but then, Hulk was technically not a strong lead character in that way (at least in the past). Overall, of all comic book films made,.
The only reason this doesn’t get five stars is because I think Edward Norton is a bit miscast as Bruce Banner. He does an admirable job, but having seen Mark Ruffalo as Banner in The Avengers, Norton just isn’t quite right. All that said, it’s a great movie. The scenes filmed in Rocinha are incredible – incredible that such a place exists and that they were able to film such a spectacular chase there. Stan Lee has his usual cameo. I recently saw the 2003 Hulk film on cable, and compared to this one, it’s ridiculous and makes no sense at all. Kind of a one-weird-director interpretation and thankfully the franchise came back home and they made a much better do-over to fit in with the Marvel Universe continuity. I’ll put in a plug here for all of the new Marvel films, especially Avengers and the Iron man series. I have them all but didn’t purchase from retrolio so I can’t review them here.
My husband and I recently started watching all of the Avengers movies in sequential order in preparation for End Game. We’re old enough that we watched the Hulk on TV, so we weren’t very excited to watch this one, because we already know the story. But we like Ed Norton, so we rented it.We were pleasantly surprised! I love how Norton plays Banner. The plot, the acting, the effects. Everything was great. It kept our interest the whole time.I’m not sure that watching this Hulk movie adds to watching the Avengers franchise, unless you don’t already know the Banner story, but it’s a really good movie in its own right. We’ve since seen Rufalo as Banner in subsequent movies and it’s a pretty seamless changeover as far as actors. I’m still unclear on how the Hulk went from out of control and trying to kill Black Widow to joining the team to fight bad guys, but that’s a different movie, lol.
This was definitely one of the best Incredible Hulk movies. What make this one more interesting was instead of the Hulk only "smashing" they where very creative in teaming the Hulk up with a rival enemy. The action and theatric special effects were amazing and the story line itself was easy to follow and kept you glued to the screen.
This is a pretty solid film from the MCU. I would put it above Iron man 2 and Thor the Dark World. If you are looking for a solid film with some good special effects that hold up today. Then I would recommend this film. The best part of this film is the end fight between The Hulk and The Abomination, which is still one of the best fights in the MCU. The CGI from 2008 is still pretty good on the Hulk and Abomination fight. Of the older MCU film this is one of the better ones in terms of story and direction. I would get this to round off anyone’s collection of the MCU.
I have been a huge super hero fan since I was a kid watching the old Fox XMen show, Sliderman, Batman, etc. When I started… assembling my MCU collection, all on DVD, this was often skipped overwhen rewatching. Many of the dark scenes were too dark and it just kept of took away a bit from the story.Fast forward to around Guardians 2’s release and we jumped from DVD to 4k in a very short time. I started getting MCU movies in 4k and watching the series over and over while running on the treadmill (multiple sessions per movie). The releases of older movies started and I started upgrading, kind of in reverse, actually. I got down to a few movies left, including the much ignored Incredible Hulk. As a collector, I could not leave all of these 4k movies with just one DVD.So with a wince, I bought the movie. Obviously I had to watch it. Goodness gracious. This is one of the best MCU remasters, hands down. HDR changes those many dark scenes to having enough details you can actually get those extra bits. The audio enhancements are impressive in DTS:X. I find DTS:X being used on remasters to be amazing. From a movie standpoint, these extra details actually add a surprisingly amount of feeling to Hulk as a character so he seems more interesting. From an AV perspective, I would rate this on par with the Jurassic Park Trilogy remaster, which are amazing. So safe to say now, I don’t skip over Incredible Hulk anymore!
Here is my rhyming homage’ to the newest “Incredible Hulk”, to the tune of Blondie’s “Call Me”Bruce Banner is the subject of a movie once againBut this time it is different (watching will not cause you pain)Marvel gets it right this timeThe Hulkster says his “HULK SMASH!” line! This Hulk! -Movie’s fine,It’s great if you’re the comics kind. This Hulk!- Movie’s fineIt’s much better than my silly rhyme,This Hulk! So…Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy this movie much, but I did! Ed Norton is perfect as Bruce Banner, the CG’s are great, Liv Tyler is still a beauty to behold, and William Hurt is a very hate worthy villain. I watched the Video On Demand rental over Thanksgiving and watched “Iron Man” right afterwards and was happy to see that I should do exactly that, as they are tied together. There is a kind touch for the old TV show fans by showing Bill Bixby on TV (The courtship of Eddy’s Father) and Lou Ferigno plays a guard at the University. If you don’t hate “Super Hero” movies you should like this fun movie as well.3 1/2*
