This was an entertaining regency romance. It was a little over the top and not always historically accurate, but if you can look past that, which I could because it didn’t travel too far into the ridiculous, you should enjoy it for what it is. Devlin, our Duke in question, needs Queen Victoria to give him permission for his latest business venture. Due to his scandalous reputation, she agrees on the premise that he settles down and takes a wife. Enter Lady Sophie, a 24 year old miss he hasn’t been able to get out of his head after she fell out of a tree at his feet at a ball some time ago. She’s unmarried and he surmises she’ll be the solution to all of his problems so he makes her an offer – marry him and he’ll financially support her orphanage. At the same time as their relationship is building, a former orphan cared for by Sophie goes missing. We’re given short chapters from the fellow committing the nefarious deeds as he plans his revenge on the Duke. Some bits were definitely out of sort for the time period – the inclusion of the queen, Sophie climbing a tree at a ball to spy on a crush, several physical and verbal altercations around Sophie that probably wouldn’t have happened in the ton, her running an orphanage and her unchaperoned attendance at a country ball that had a reputation for illicit activities. The last one, especially, was unbelievable for an innocent miss – she was looking for clues. Yeah…no. There was mention of Sophie being a scholar/blue sto.
What a wonderful debut novel. Writing was very clever and witty and, the hero of the story make me swoon so hard. I have been waiting for this book for a month before it released because the author put A bit of the first chapter on her website. I fell in love with the way she written it. Writing totally won me over, and I wanted to buy the book as fast as I could.Devlin and Sophie, I absolutely love the interactions between them even in the first chapter. They were so cute with one another even know basically they never thought they would fall in love.Devlin is known as the ’Devil Duke’. He had a tragic past which you must read about I do not want to spoil it it is very very good. Especially the way he separates himself with other people it does explain a lot why he wants to to not get too close to someone. He was very charming and I have to say he’s one of my top book heroes now.Sophie, I loved her so much. She was a strong female character. It was very cute how she came to trust the charming Rake. Just watching her interactions with DevlinWas quite amusing. I chuckled at some of the comebacks they jutted at each other. But another sweet thing is she brings out the best in Devlin. Both are afraid to love in different ways. But it was quite sweet seeing them when they did get along with each other, and slowly start to fall for each other! And peace by piece they broke down each other’s barriers and started to love! And I also loved all of the side characters! Really loved Sop.
Love the h and h, storyline was very good .the exchange between the heroine and hero had me laughing out loud.
I enjoyed this story immensely. It is a well written historical romantic mystery.I loved the dialogue between the Duke and Sofie, two such hard headed characters.
Maybe 4.5 stars – there was a lot to like about this book and I really enjoyed the author’s writing style, she was able to change the tone of the book going from fun and flirty to down right terrifying and back to fun without disrupting the flow of the story, which in my experience is quite impressive, especially from a debut author!!Lady Sophie Wolcott and Devlin Markham, the Duke of Huntington meet when Sophie falls out of tree after spying on the man of her dreams and seeing him propose to another woman. Devlin aka the Devil Duke is in the midst of a heated tryst when Sophie lands in the bushes. He helps her up and sends his trysting partner on her way. He and Sophie talk for a bit and she is surprised that she is not nearly as heartbroken as she thought and that she is attracted to Devlin – but that will never do because he is a rake and she will never, ever let herself fall for a rake.A year later, Devlin is meeting with the Queen, he needs her approval for the construction of the Trans-Atlantic Cable, a project he is heavily invested in. The Queen refused to sign unless Devlin gives up his rakish ways and settles down with a respectable woman. Devlin is not happy about being blackmailed by the Queen, but agrees. He knows exactly who he is going to marry – Lady Sophie, the woman who didn’t fall for his charms and the woman he hasn’t been able to forget.Sophie has decided that she is not going to marry, she will devote herself to the orphanage that her mother supported an.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the characters and their stories. There was an element of suspense that kept me guessing until the end. The book moved along nicely and was well-written. A great read!
A wonderful story! I just might read it again.I did read it again!
Amazing! I could not put it down!
I really liked the hero, Devlin ( who isn’t really that devilish), but especially the heroine, Sophie. Although there is the requisite immediately list between the two, Sophie never looses her independence and fiestiness. The plot is serviceable, the mystery rather easy to figure out. My main complaint is that the entire action takes place over only a few days! Still the banter and chemistry ultimately overcome the flaws.
Loved this book. Loved the interaction of the main characters. This book was funny, heart warming & sexy. Looking forward to reading more books from this author.
