Honestly, Dinosaur Island sat in the closet for a good four months, because the sheer number of bits and parts intimidated me—I thought there was no way I had the time to learn and teach a game with this much stuff in it. When I finally got around to playing my first solo game, I realized it was a lot less complex than it seemed. Each of the board phases seamlessly flowed into one another and by the end of my short, 5 round game, it felt natural.Playing with others is where I encountered two significant hurdles:1. This game takes up an insane amount of real estate with four players barely fitting on a full sized kitchen table. I can’t imagine what a tabletop playing up to six players—allowed by the Totally Liquid expansion—would look like.2. Analysis paralysis is real, and this is not the game for your friends who suffer from it. With each round featuring multiple phases of worker placement decisions AND players working toward competitive and personal goals, we had to implement a time limit on phases at our table. Those issues aside, I’ve really enjoyed the theme and choices you have to make in Dinosaur Island and appreciate the included rules to scale the length of the game from short to medium to long.
This game is fantastic! There is a bit of a learning curve to it, but once you have your “ah-ha†moment the game really takes off. Multiple variants included (solo to 4 player, short-medium-long game objectives, plot twists) all add up to tons of re-playability. I’ve had the game for just shy of 2 months, and have already played over 10 times! Highly recommend this game!
A lot of moving parts but the game is fairly simple once you learn it and a lot of fun!
Dinosaur Island is a brilliant Euro-style, worker placement game that actually has a brilliant theme! Also, the component quality (with ONE BIG EXCEPTION) are exceptional! Especially if you can get the kickstarter version! In Dinosaur Island, you’re completing with the other players to build the best, most exciting and profitable dinosaur theme park. DI uses a fairly innovative worker placement system where you have two different sets of works-scientists and basic workers. Furthermore, the game has FOUR separate actions boards that all the players use during each of the games phases (their even labeled phase 1, phase 2, etc….). The two sets of workers (scientists, workers) can only be used on certain boards. It’s really interesting.During the course of the game, the players will place scientists and workers in order to obtain dinosaur DNA (from amber-colored dice!) to create dinosaurs, hire "experts" that allow to break the rules of the game, or give you a special power. You can build extra attractions to add to your park in addition to the dinos! You can also increase the security of your theme park to keep those dinosaurs under control less the escape and attack your theme park guests (which CAN happen!)!!Victory points are scored in Three main ways:First, obviously, is building up your dinosaur theme park. Every dinosaur you add to your park (both multiples of the same species and/or new and different species) adds to your park’s "excitement level." Your e.
Great game that I was able to get at the discounted price
This game is awesome! Your competing to have the best dinosaur theme park. I mean who wouldn’t want to see dinosaurs at a theme park. This game has A LOT of choices to make in order to expand your park, get bigger and better dinosaurs, and increase security- we can’t let those dinosaurs get loose. If you don’t have enough security those dinosaurs will eat your guests! This game is just brilliant, with an incredible 90’s theme behind it. The colors are bright and obnoxious- in the best way possible. Love the color scheme. This game is fairly easy to learn. The rulebook is really well done. Definitely a must have for any dinosaur, or theme park loving individual.
This is one of my favorite games. The theme is well incorporated and really adds to the experience.
Love the game concept. Love the actual gameplay. However there is some discoloration on the pieces and they don’t all match. Not the end of the world, but wasn’t super happy to see that for the price of the game.
This game is a relatively simple worker placement game with great Jurassic Park flavor. Complexity is medium without feeling cumbersome. Parts and pieces are sturdy and functional (Slotted boards are awesome!)
I love this game. The mechanics make every game dynamic and the game was delivered as advertised.
