First off, I have been a huge fan of Campbell’s work every since I discovered his 8 Bit Dreams project, so for those of you unfamiliar with it and are a 90’s kid and/or a classic NES/SNES fan, check it out as well. You will not be disappointed.I was blown away by the amount of detail and obvious love that was put into every frame of this book. The chapter style transition was incredible and the setting and characters are a breath of fresh air. I loved the chapter-interlude details on insights into the Peaches culture, village and creatures of the under-the-river world. I can’t wait for Book Two and future work from Mr. Whyte.
I picked this book up on a whim after seeing it at the local library. It’s a beautifully drawn, well-told story that feels unique, whimsical, nuanced, funny and dangerous, and it has me clamoring for more. The medium/style changes from chapter to chapter, from sepia-toned pencil to watercolor to anime-like cels to pixel art to oil pastel, yet retains a consistent feel throughout. Mr. Whyte often utilizes a 3/4 isometric perspective reminiscent of 16-bit action-adventure and RPG video games, which evokes a sense of dimensionality and space that are often missing from similarly-styled artists. Indeed, during the pixel-art chapter, I found myself hoping this can one day be adapted for a video game. Maybe a point n’ click adventure without the pointing and clicking. In any case, this is a marvelous book, and I can’t wait to see more from Campbell Whyte.
Think Stranger Things (but less dark) + Over the Garden Wall (but a more fleshed out world). Cute as heck but also there is a darkness lurking beneath. Some mystery, some comedy, some little kid argument drama. The art is AWESOME! And in between each chapter you get incredibly detailed and thought out drawings/explanations that elaborate on the world.
Fans of Over the Garden Wall will enjoy this book! The amount of love the author poured into each page is palpable. Each chapter is crafted in an art style unique to the child it focuses on, and the level of care Whyte put into the smallest details makes rereads worthwhile, especially if you’re familiar with some of the inspirations. For example, there’s a panel that’s a callback to shoujo manga with faded flowers in the background, but in this case, he used Western Australian natives instead of the typical roses. Perth comes to life as the setting for a fantasy story in ways we don’t often see, and even just for that, it’s worth a read. I can’t wait for the second and final installment.
Personally I found this book to be wonderful. I suggest it to people who love graphic novels. It takes real talent to illustrate SO well in so many different styles while taking nothing away from the story unfolding before your eyes. I do love a good “Goonies†type of story. I read this whole book, cover to cover in one sitting. I got super excited to see a sequel is coming, already pre-ordered mine! I enjoyed the characters, the setting and I liked not being able to tell what would happen next. This book is a treasure and I’m calling in now folks….2025 will see “Home Time†the movie! Watch!Buy this book then come back and buy the sequel. I’d say it’s great for ages 10 and up. Get them as gifts! Especially for all the kiddos and adults stuck at home right now during this pandemic. It will keep them occupied for a while! :)
Had to post a review for this when I saw that it only had 2, this excellent graphic novel deserves more! The artwork is beautiful, and the world feels very fleshed out. You can’t help but want to visit this made up village as you follow the characters’ journey through it. The artist uses a different art style for each chapter, and while I’m not the biggest fan of pixel art, each chapter is super visually captivating. I also enjoyed the little glimpses into the culture of the world in the breaks in between the chapters. I’d love to play a video game in the setting, or go fall in a river and end up there myself. Highly recommend Home Time and look forward to book 2.
