I loved Shadow Hearts, and was very excited when the sequel was announced. Finally I have played it, and I have to say I’m impressed. First of all, the graphics have been vastly improved, ditching the static backgrounds in favour of fully realised 3-D locations (albeit with fixed viewpoints, like Final Fantasy X), and improving on the character models too. In fact, the improvements put the first game to shame, and make it look positively primitive. Everything else has been retained, and in most cases, tweaked for the better. In many ways, Covenant follows the well-established RPG pattern, with a drawn out story involving much duplicity and world travel, many side-missions and secret locations (which, like in the first game, you may only stumble across by chance if you address the right character at the right time), a series of stand alone challenges or “pit-fights” for the completists, and so on. Where Covenant distances itself from the crowd is with the adult nature of a lot of the material, and the continuation of some rather twisted themes carried over from the first game. Re-appearing here are the “graveyard” that exists in the hero’s unconscious mind, his ability to morph into various monsters, along with some very fruity dialogue, plus a really sarcastic approach to the usually ponderous aspects of some RPG’s that actually made me laugh out loud once or twice (example – meeting the “Ring Soul”…you’ll see what I mean). There are even quizzes and memory games on offer t.
This game is the bomb
ShadowHearts 2 is easily one of the better Playstation 2 RPGS. Not that I speak from a lot of experience, but I do know what I like and Shadowhearts has it! Here is a quick run down- – Graphics- Good I guess, they seemed great to me, but too be honest, all games now have “great” graphics to me ( I grew up in the days of the Intellivision and Atari). – Gameplay- very fun, and quite easy (Until the final battle). The “ring” style form of battle is easy to catch on to, and adds a nice element of skill to the game. – The mazes – while they can get a bit repetitive they aren’t endlessly long like some games. As you progress into a new cave/maze/challenge expect about 1 hour worth of exploring before you reach the main boss. – Game length – it took me almost 43 hours to beat the game… and that (I feel) is a pretty quick time…. I didn’t do a lot of “Extra” exploring. – Extras- There is a nice variety of weapon add-ons as you progress through the game. While it isn’t up to the level of Baldurs Gate, it does add to the game play. – Cut Scenes- Shadowhearts 2 plays like it is a movie, which adds a little extra interest, but some of the cut scenes can last over 10 minutes! At some point I just want to get back to the hacking. – The game is rated “Teen” but I am not really sure why. Often times you wonder why a game is rated “M”, but the opposite is at play here… you wonder how the game could only be rated “T”. – The game has many dark elements to it… and I have to admit.
I finished Shadow Hearts Covenant last night and really enjoyed the game. Total playing time for me was 58 hours, and I only did a portion of possible sidequests. In the Shadow Hearts series, I have now played Koudelka (the PS1 prequel to SH), Shadow Hearts, and Shadow Hearts Covenant. Each of the three games is 4 or 5 stars for me, I recommend them all fully. I think with each successive game, the gameplay, combat system, and graphics got better. Also, with each successive game, the overall theme got a little less dark (although I prefer darker, personally). Koudelka was a brilliant, very dark-themed horror survival game with RPG elements that was slowed only by a slow combat system and somewhat blocky graphics. Shadow Hearts was dark-themed, but less so than Koudelka, with vast improvements in look, feel, combat system and overall gameplay. Shadow Hearts Covenant is closer to Shadow Hearts, but less dark-themed still, with further improved gameplay.Shadow Hearts Covenant was a great game, 4.5 stars for me.Strengths:- The Judgement Ring system for turn-based combat is a lot of fun, and is even a little better and deeper here than in Shadow Hearts; combines strategy of the best turn-based RPGs with timing/skill- Great story, with multiple flashbacks and tie-ins to SH and similarly spectacular plots and ending(s) that will leave you both satisfied and thinking- Yuri and Karin are some of the best, most memorable characters I’ve ever played. Gepetto, Joachim, and the oth.
“Shadow Hearts: Covenant” is an RPG that is turn based. However, the “Ring of Judgment” a spinning reel that requires coordination to operate, adds a real-time element to battle. Despite the name, the game’s music and characters are not as dark as I thought they would be. Also, Midway being the makers of Mortal Kombat, I was suspecting a slightly different ambiance. However, I’m glad they did the game the way they did. As usual in an RPG, you throw together a crew of unusual people (everything from a German Kaiser soldier to a professional wrestling vampire) and they go on a journey to prevent chaos from ensuing upon the earth. You must strengthen the characters with equipment, skills, and leveling up. The heroes chase a sequence of monsters throughout early 20th century Europe. The game has some enjoyable comic moments, which is not as common in RPGs as with some other types of games. I would recommend this game.
The Shadow Hearts series is a real alternative type of RPG that makes itself stands out from other RPGs in the market. The first one got the unfortunate fate with a close launch with Final Fantasy X, so it got sunk to the bottom. Nonetheless, this doesn’t discouraged Midway and Azure to roll out the second instalment of the Shadow HeartsCovenant’s event happened 6 months after the first game when Yuri the ill fated hero decided to move into a peaceful life in a small country village. Nonetheless, with the outbreak of World War I, no place is safe and peaceful. Thus he was forced into fight to protect this small village from German invasion, which eventually led him back into arms. The character designs are much better this time round with each of the character having their own personality that actually shows up in the story. An old puppeteer whose puppet is a mirror image of his late daughter, a German official, a gay vampire wrestler, a spoiled and adventurous Russian princess, a single hearted samurai, a tarot card reader and a white wolf. They together formed a very unique party one had ever seen in a RPG. Their abilities also hovered around their nature. Abilities like Marionette, Tarot Cards, Aromatherapy, Muscle skills etc. are very well thought of and designed. They also exhibit different types of attribute that makes the formation of your favourite team a very enjoyable experience. The judgement ring system is back but much better. The judgement ring is a dial that appe.
After having been disappointed by Final Fantasy X-2, I did not expect the sequel to Shadow Hearts to surpass the original. As entertaining as the original was, SH:C might be one of the best RPG I have played, competiting only with Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy VII for the top position. Like most RPG fans, the most important aspect of an RPG game for me is the story and the character development. If the characters are trite or the story boring, no amount of interesting gameplay can redeem it. In this case, not only was the gameplay excellent and innovative, but the character development was surprisingly deep and the story engaging, humorous, and dramatic. The music was perfect for the various scenes, and the sidequests, while unnecessary to complete the game, were extremely enjoyable. I highly recommend this game to mature fans of RPGs.
I am a big fan of this game! I never got to play the first one before it, but I became a fan due to this one!! I love the story line and all the costumes! They are quite interesting!! Thanks so much!
I purchased this game on a whim. I played for the shadow hearts and enjoyed it.Pro- game is turn based with attack depending on accurate strike to a turning ring- story is new, different, and interesting to follow- character voices portray character well- cut scenes are solid but nothing similar to a PS3 RPG graphicsCon- non
This is ione great game. You don’t necessarily have to play the first one to enjoy the second one. I’ve played the first Shadow Hearts, and this is by far the best sequel for any game that I have ever played! The storyline, graphics, music, game play all rival or surpass that of any Final Fantasy series. The game is also coded in Dolby ProLogic II so if you have a nice home theatre system like I do, you’ll be amazed at the movies… it’s such a high quality production in terms of both visual and auditorial experience. Do yourself a favor this holiday and buy this game and enjoy. You’ll be glad you did.
