I like Game of Thrones, that’s why I bought it on blue ray, This is a review of the features not the show.Usually when I buy a full season on DVD or Blue ray I feel a little bit cheated. Sure it comes with the show and that is why I bought it, but the features are always lacking IMO. This is not the case with this set. The first disc has a very in depth Character profile section, these are clips of the actors and show creators explaining who the feel they character is. This feature is well presented, and contains most of the characters from the show, not all unfortunately. Another feature was the In episode guide, Which is a pull out side menu that accompanies you as you watch each episode, this feature while functional and cool, does not add anything to the episdoes and all of the content is from the already given bonus features, so you learn nothing new. There are many other featurettes included on the last disk. The best feature by far for me was The Complete Guide to Westros, this feature is awesome. It provides a great way for a new fan or even an old book fan like me a great way to go in depth into the history of westros and Essos. It is split into 3 sections History, Houses, and Lands. The Lands and Houses section is just text, but the History has many different topics ranging from the Children of the forest to ancient Valaryia’s history, these topics are narrated by the actors from the show and lay out the history of this world very well, some topics come with multiple.
most of the time, I dont recommend screen adaptations of books, because they always try (and fail) to make it "better" than the book. This one does not do that – this simply, and truely – visually expresses the book! (well – except that Daenerys has black hair in the book… and in the book Tyrion is wry and sarcastic, and funny… and very honestly expresses many of the physical issues little people have to suffer negotiating space in a big world…) – over all however, if I met someone who does not like to read – I would highly recommend this show.If I met someone who likes to read – but doesn’t know if they will enjoy this story – I would highly recommend this (and then encourage them to read the books!) and I’m glad I bought it! Because when the book comes out – I will watch them all again – refresh my memory – and then READ the BOOK!…The books are awesome! and this is a very near representation of the books!
I love the story but I think the violence against women could have been toned down and it would not have taken away from the story.
my stepdaughter hooked me on this show and I have since then gotten many friends to get into it as well. I usually lead into my pitch by saying it’s like Lord of the Rings meets King Arthur meets PORN and then they go fight ZOMBIES. How can you lose?As an HBO show, it is not limited to broadcast television’s same standards for ratings etc. This means it can be much more graphic, both in terms of violence and also sexuality. Many "taboo" subjects are tackled. There truly is something for everyone. The DVD itself is a clean, tight transfer and a beautiful package. I have not yet finished going through all the features. The show itself has ten episodes per season (one of the few drawbacks to an HBO show) but each of the five discs also has other fun things to check out. I have to admit this is one of the reasons I’ve been slower getting around to the features…. it’s easier when they are on a separate features disc as in most movie packages. When I am watching the show I am usually burning through all ten episodes in a marathon run and then I have put away each of the discs in succession so I don’t get them back out and watch the features.I must treat myself to a features day one of these days though.Meanwhile, if you like this show, you NEED to own it. The only reason I can imagine not getting the DVD is if you get it on Blu-Ray. I love GoT so much I even ordered the cookbook. LOL
I gave up my cable after paying over $200 a month (basic cable and internet) I finally came to my senses and realize what I could do with an extra $2400 a year. I happened to be shopping at Menards and the two gentlemen that were assisting me couldn’t stop talking about this show. Out of curiosity I wanted to know what was this great show that they couldn’t stop talking about, and they told me the Game Of Thrones. I asked around and everyone I talked to couldn’t stop raving about what a great show it was. I had no intention of ever flushing that kind of money down the drain again by going back to cable so I decided to try retrolio. I first purchased only one episode because I didn’t know if I would like it or not. They had me hooked from the very first episode. I love the interesting story lines, that gradually draws you into a world that at first glance, I never could have imagined I would enjoy. I think this is my favorite show right after the Walking Dead.
I’m way behind the times. Had to get started on Game of Thrones. At first I was totally stunned by the violence and treachery. I said I would stop watching. But I couldn’t help myself. As the season progressed I was totally IN. The characters are so real, lovable and truly HATEable! The episodes are so well done. OH MY! The ending of the last episode. OH MY! Pretty incredible. I have to get going on Season 2.
I am reading the books right now and watching the show after I finish each corresponding book. I have been impressed with how true the show is to the books. Any changes they do make are changes that make sense for film and do not betray anything important from the source material. For those who are unfamiliar with the series; it is a fantasy tale with very subdued fantasy. Most of the focus in the first book is on the detailed and truly human characters as well as the rich and twisted cultures of the world. However there is an undercurrent of mystery, intrigue and potentially magical things lurking just beyond the worlds awareness. It’s good. Read it!
I don’t watch a series until at least two seasons have been released. Then I am careful to cull reviews from "every day people." rather than what is written by the critics. I was going to take a LONG plane ride so I figured that downtime would give me an excellent opportunity to watch the first season in one fell swoop (as I like to do).I have to say I was impressed with the story line and level of detail from the first minute. It’s not very often that the title sequence IS IMPORTANT. I watched it a few times to make sure that I had my "geography" down. I am VERY picky with any type of "story that takes place in an ancient land with knights, armor and horses" but I didn’t find myself rolling my eyes at all. The actors have bad teeth and look "grubby enough" for this type of land.To give an example of other shows I enjoy: Dexter, American Horror Story: Asylum. The Sopranos, Mad Men. I enjoy good writing and a certain level of violence. Give this series a shot, but don’t watch it if you can’t PAY ATTENTION. It’s not for glancing up at while you’re folding the laundry.
This show really does live up to the accolades, I haven’t read the books but the fact that the writer is closely involved with the series and script adaption is obviously part of the reason the show is so well structured and produced. I am not usually a fan of these type of fantasy shows but what sets Game of Thrones apart is the great characters who are created to be more real, dimensional and human even though the mystical and unexplained happens they are regular humans for the most part dealing with extreme situations. Also the production and set design is incredible shooting on location in regions that evoke the performance also adds another layer something I like to see in an age where green screen performance can be a little obvious regardless of how good the actor is, there is something to be said for making the set so authentic that it inspires the performance. There are plenty of great reviews in depth here on retrolio, so all I want to say is from someone who usually finds fantasy a bore, that this has kept me wanting more at every episode!
I got so sucked into this show that I watched all of Season 1 in one weekend. If you aren’t sure about the whole castles and knights genre, this I feel falls outside the norm of that experience. There is a modest amount of magic and fantasy, but the vast majority of the story is character centric. And in this case, you have multiple families and regions with their own inter-twined dramas making up a diverse plot that does not stagnate. The acting is superb and I find myself always wanting to come back when each episode ends. There is a large amount of gore, especially in Season 1, too much in my opinion. But that lessens as the episodes go on. And a fair amount of full on nudity, so all in all NOT for the kids.
