Although only 200 pages I think this is the most lucid and best organized account of the battle. The maps are very well done. I think he could have focused more on the troops coming by railroad to the battlefield.
Although we have many books about Manassas First, Professor henessy gives us some spetacular and important details. It is also a book that clarifies many geographic points, and we can better understand the movements of the federals and the confederates, specially on the Henry Hill. Maybe the only one who explain what happened to the "audiency" running for their lives after the battle. Superb !
John Hennessy writes an outstanding overview of the First Battle of Manassas. I bought this book to gain insight into this battle before touring the actual battlefield. The maps were easy to follow, the basic battle strategy was very simple to understand. A brief overview of each leader was given. If you are looking for a book to cover the entire battle in 200 pages or so then this is your book. This book also led me to do additional research based on the information at the back of the book. Do not miss out on this excellent read. Thank You John J. Hennessy!
Mr. Hennessy is the best! I could not put this book down and would read it again and again
I’ve been reading US military history for almost 50 years now. Most of my focus has been on World War II, Korea and Vietnam. This is one of the few books I have read on my most recent interest in the American Civil War. But I can say that this is one of the better historical accounts that I have read on American military history. This book is great for novice or experienced history bugs in my opinion. It has a very easy flowing feel to it that leads to an enjoyable experience. The author introduces you to the various players in the battle. He give actual quotes from soldiers, politicians who were there and civilians caught up in the battle. He explains step by step the actions by both sides before, during and after the battle in a non-biased way. You feel that you could be there actually witnessing the events as they unfold. To me it was a real page turner. There are excellent maps that go along with the narrative, a few pages of photos and at the end both the Union and Confederate orders of battle listing all the units involved along with the commander of each unit.I enjoyed the book very much and look forward to reading more books by the author. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the first major battle of the Civil War.
John Hennessey was a former park ranger at Manassas National Battlefield Park. He wrote two books about the First and Second Battles of Manassas/Bull Run. This book covers the disaster of the first battle. Even though Bull Run was a Confederate victory, both sides really experienced disasters. It really came down to who made the least mistakes on that day. The book covers the officers involved in the battle, the opening movements, Battle of Blackburn’s Ford, First Bull Run, and the aftermath. Both sides thought it would be a quick fight and had romantic views of war. After the battle, the romanticism stopped and both sides knew a long fight was a head. I liked that Hennessey included multiple perspectives in this book. For example, a lot of people in the North were devastated by this loss, but others, Hennessey pointed out, saw the loss as a good thing because the Union learned they needed a new strategy to win this war. The South was happy, but some in Dixie saw this as false hope. I have read this book multiple times and I will read again. It was a short but informative read about the first major battle of the Civil War. Even if you are not a huge history fan but you’d like to learn more of the war, I recommend this book.
While Hennessy’s book is a very competent study of the First Battle of Bull Run, the authormakes some statements that contradict my own research on the Third Brigade of Heintzelman’s Third Division. My biggest concern is about a footnote on page 186, where the author writes, “It’s possible that Arnold’s battery was in position on Chinn Ridge. Howard later misstated his destination as Ricketts’s battery.†I have found no evidence that Arnold’s battery was on Chinn Ridge but lots of evidence that Howard was, indeed, ordered to support Ricketts’s battery on Henry Hill.A few other claims I find puzzling are that McDowell “hung back†with Howard’s brigade (he stayed only long enough to tell Howard to keep his brigade in reserve until called for); that Howard arrived on the field at 2:00 PM (he didn’t cross Bull Run until 3:00); and that the New Englanders were the first to show signs of panic (they weren’t). Also, the map on page 87 shows the Third Maine (one of Howard’s regiments) and Second Connecticut as part of Keyes’ advance on Henry Hill, when the regiments were in fact the Second Maine and the Third Connecticut. That said, no historian of a campaign or battle can get all the details exactly right, and a few debatable conclusions don’t detract from the general helpfulness of Hennessy’s book.
Excellent read. Provides detail of the battle and the leaders involved that other books ignore.
This is a cracking little book – just what’s needed. No preamble, but straight into details of the battle; and more details about the battle than some larger books on the same subject. Clear maps, and enough of them to do the job. It would be nice to have casualty figures for each unit, even if estimated.
As a lover of military history, I had never really delved much into Civil War battles. This very informative, well-researched, yet easy-to-read book was a good start to my journey into that era of U.S. military history. Definitely recommend!
