This show speaks for itself. Amazing. I loved that I could buy season one for $15. It didn’t come with all the bells and whistles (map, picture cards, etc. ?) that the $38 set did, but I got the entire season & the extras on DVD. I was hoping to find more seasons at the cheaper price & am so disappointed that they’ve raised the price for this season, significantly! It’s still the same materials, but the price is now an additional $17! I saw this exact copy at a local Albertsons grocery store for $18 last week. Why did they have to get greedy? Customers seemed so happy with the lower price & the dvd set without the map, etc. Now it seems, you can spend just $6 more and get all the extras that come with the much more expensive set. ***Recap… Was $15 for this set that had the entire season, extra commentaries, specials, etc. I saw many people who posted that they got the free HD digital diwnload on retrolio, as well. All for the $15 price that was so awesome in comparison to any other offers. NOW the same set is being offered, by the same shop for $32. Another offer is available for $38 that has all that I’ve mentioned but also includes other materials like a map or maps, picture cards, etc. I am unsure of all the extras, but you get my point. It’s a shame that people who need or like to pay less, for the basics of the GoT first season, can no longer pay the reasonable price of $15. Not on retrolio, anyway. Don’t get me wrong, I still choose retrolio over MANY other retailers, but.
WOW what a ride! Game of Thrones is a show I probably never would have watched but I had a friend over and we had just finished dinner and it was the premiere of season two and I started watching with out a clue as to what was going on, by the end of the show I sat there dumbfounded and the following week I was in a state of shock, by the third show I needed to know what the hell was going on and what I had missed, well needless to say a few days later I started season 1 and what I thought was going to take a couple of weeks turned out to be three days (really 2 1/2) and it could have been only 1 day but my mind was on information overload and it was too much for me to process so I had to spread it out over a little time and then after season 2 ended I had to re-watch season 1 again. If you have not seen Game of Thrones then start off slow, turn off all the phones make sure the kids are in bed or in school or at a friends house for the day or night (this is not a show for children) because you don’t want any interruptions, you want to take this nice and slow like a 76 Bordeaux, you want to swirl this puppy in your mind and take it all in, because if you try to rush it and pack too many episodes into one night or if you’re tired you will miss something and you don’t want to do that. Now that your friends, neighbors, and family are tried of watching your kids spend a little time with the family then get ready for season 2.
I don’t watch a series until at least two seasons have been released. Then I am careful to cull reviews from "every day people." rather than what is written by the critics. I was going to take a LONG plane ride so I figured that downtime would give me an excellent opportunity to watch the first season in one fell swoop (as I like to do).I have to say I was impressed with the story line and level of detail from the first minute. It’s not very often that the title sequence IS IMPORTANT. I watched it a few times to make sure that I had my "geography" down. I am VERY picky with any type of "story that takes place in an ancient land with knights, armor and horses" but I didn’t find myself rolling my eyes at all. The actors have bad teeth and look "grubby enough" for this type of land.To give an example of other shows I enjoy: Dexter, American Horror Story: Asylum. The Sopranos, Mad Men. I enjoy good writing and a certain level of violence. Give this series a shot, but don’t watch it if you can’t PAY ATTENTION. It’s not for glancing up at while you’re folding the laundry.
When I first saw ads for Game of Thrones I immediately was super turned off and was sure it was ultra stupid and knew it sucked. Somehow I wound up watching about 5 minutes of an episode and was instantly hooked. I’ve since bought every season. Every single episode/season is the bomb. Best TV movie ever made. Super engaging plots, music, interior and exterior settings, color, characters, suspense, eroticism and everything else are top of the heap. I’ve bought entire seasons and watched 2-3 episodes a night. Can’t begin to recommend it highly enough. I can’t believe that Season 8 isn’t going to be aired until next year. When I heard it was going to be aired this summer I got freaked out wondering how I could wait an entire year without seeing a new season. Recently learned that it won’t come out until next year (2019) and that it will only have 6 episodes. What an immense bummer. But I’m sure it will be more than worth it. I’m in love with Queen Daenerys and won’t be able to stand it if anything bad happens to her.
Good acting and storyline. I can see why some people complain about the sexual content. (I had my windows open when I watched this and wondered if my neighbors could hear it and might be wondering what I was watching.) There’s one sexual scene in an episode somewhere in the middle of the season that gets a bit over the top, so much so that it detracts from scene and makes it difficult to follow what the character who is speaking during it is saying. (The sex scene is happening between two other characters in the background.) It’s almost as if the director was trying too hard to be "cutting edge." The scene was so over the top and unnecessary that I had to take off one star for it because what the speaking character was saying during it was very important to the plot line, and the overly gratuitous sex was distracting in a bad way. Other than that the season is good. This is a very popular series, so I’m willing to give season 2 a chance before making a final decision on the series.UPDATE: I changed my rating to 5 stars because season 2 has alot less nudity and sex scenes…only what you would normally expect from a series on cable. And after listening to the season 2 audio commentary from the creators of the show, it sounded like they intentionally toned it down because they prefer to showcase the great acting and great story line. I would also give season 2 a 5 star rating as well.
So glad we purchased this when we did! Ok so, it’s the first season of HBO’s series from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Now, the t.v. series is not 100% like the books, it skips over some things or changes a few things in a character but overall it gives you more or less the same story that was written in the books. This is just beautifully done. The acting, directing, costumes, landscapes, character development – it’s all just top notch! You really do feel like the characters and places they are in are real and you could just jump on a plane and travel to them. There is nudity, violence, drama, humor, incest, heartbreak, justice and satisfaction all served up in this series. Just a forewarning if you’ve never seen any of the episodes or read the books no one is safe! This series will break your heart over and over but you’ll want to watch and see what happens next.
A great new work for fans of Fantasy! The head author (Weis) has certainly done his homework on mythos and characterization of heroes and villains. The magic believable in its telling, and the characters sculpted into the many varied images that comprise the gauntlet of available types. I am amazed at how varied and wonderful the characters in this story are, and how well played are our notions of differing people and lands. Overall the tone is ‘Northern’ deep and fierce and cold, yet balance by warmth and human frailty The acting is good to great at times, and is perhaps best both in the moments of interpersonal conflict, and also it seems at times for no other reason then to let the actors stretch out and be highly mutl -dimensional. The bad guys at times are allowed to be humane and suffering, and if not loyal to outsiders they are loyal to family to whom they are nearly always connected and engaged. The good at times are allowed to be broken, to give into wickedness out of necessity if not desire, but are maybe slightly better the the bad for being able to stand and ‘be honorable’ when it is absolutely necessitated, and when so, often with compromise and loss of personal face. Tribute should also be given to costume, and landscape design. Many believable and yet wonderful landscapes, cities, clothing, and cultures have been built up here. Overall, epic in nature and epic in work. Impeccably, crafted
I signed up for HBO & was mesmerized instantly Binge watching all 8 seasons, like nothing ive ever seen before. Every single Season was a total surprise & in fact every episode was completely unpredictable. Immediately began purchasing all Eight Seasons but to my dismay discovered that retrolio only offers 6 of the eight. Seasons 4 & 6 are randomly & without explanation unavailable ??? The only way I can Binge watch now is to sign up for HBO every time I want to watch all 8 seasons sequentially. WHY ??? HELLO retrolio, ARE YOU LISTENING 🦻 after purchasing 6 of 8 entire seasons only then to be told the only way to purchase the remaining 2 Seasons is one episode at a time OR to have to purchase HBO (Again) to finish watching (what’s up with that) ? If this is some kind of licensing politics retrolio (BUY THE RIGHTS) you CAN afford it otherwise place a disclaimer with each of the 6 available seasons so collectors like myself don’t get blindsided after the fact !!!
Another reviewer commented that there’s not much "story" here and that what "story" there is has been juiced up, so to speak, with gratuitous sex and violence. I disagree. There is a good "story" here. A story that deals with honor and familial bond and vengeance and the cost of revenge, not only within a family, but to an entire realm. This "story" also explores what it means to be "high born" or "low born." How luck plays a part in life’s trials and tribulations. How youth can be foolish and brash. How oldsters can hold on to grudges that destroy lives for generations. I agree that in the series there’s a lot of gratuitous nudity, particularly of young women. If it wasn’t gratuitous we’d see more male nudity, more nude old men and women, nude fat people, etc. I was disturbed by the casual references to the use of young boys, and other perversions like incest. But the truth is the royal families of Europe historically participated in all sorts of debauchery, and sexual lechery; as did (and does) the Catholic church with all it’s pedophile priests. So there’s plenty of pure story here. So much so, you could delete the scenes of violence and sex and still enjoy this series. (I, in fact, ofter turn away from the violence and the sex (actually close my eyes and plug my ears against the sound of flesh being cut or seared) then peak to continue watching "the story" continue. The young girl Arya’s in particular. What a tough f.
This series, based on Martin’s "A Song of Fire and Ice" double trilogy, is unparalleled in just about every category one would look for in a show. Be it the writing, directing, casting, acting, wardrobe, or set production, you won’t be let down. In fact, not only won’t you be let down, but you’re in for a visual treat, and one that grips you emotionally. You’ll laugh, cry, and in every way blown away by how well the show is put together.Very basically, the show is about the King’s throne, and who will out maneuver whom to get their family, or someone in their family to the top, to be King. You’ll watch with rapt attention how the choices each of the 10 or so major characters affect the rest of the world. Peter Linklage absolutely dominates his role as "the Imp"–the youngest son of the richest family in what they refer to as "the 7 Kingdoms," and just dares you to root against him as he is the dwarf son of the patriarch of the Lannister family. As amazingly acted as this show is, it’s hard to find even a single flaw in the entire show. If the show has any weaknesses, it would be in trying to pass 20 something year old actors as 14 and 15 year olds, and, if you want to call it a weakness, there are only 10 shows per season and as the show keeps delivering one of the most epic, addictive performances, I’ve found it hard, personally, not to watch the 20+ episodes which have been made because you’ll always be yearning for more. For the parents, I would.
