Sorry, I like Alien 3. It is the underrated piece in this franchise. The special edition adds more character development and more intensity. The weakest point of this movie remains the very ending. Great start to David Fincher's filmmaking career!

It presented a different spin on the events from the first two movies. It would have been nice for Ripley to have had a break from being chased and have had a 'happy-ever-after moment though. However it was not meant to be....There is one question about this movie that baffled me. How did the egg get on the ship and who laid it? The queen was never inside of the ship!

I liked it.The atmosphere is a little bit different, more focus on people and their relations in face of the danger.Ripley is a more developed character than in the previous movies, and other characters besides her are more developed too.We also learn more about the alien species. Especially if you had already watched the whole seriesand you've came back to watch it again more carefully.First movie is the great classic, second... needed to be made, third trails after first one in my opinion.

Most of the comments on retrolio.com about the extended "Alien 3" praise it over the first version. The reviewers emphasize that the film studio screwed up by interfering with the director's vision. However, they make no mention of Carrie Henn's comments. (Carrie Henn played Newt in the 2nd film.) Henn, years later, told "People Magazine" that there was no way to explain why her character was 7 years older and that she was done with acting by then.Since I love the film, of course, I didn't mind seeing more of it. However, the extended version adds a bunch of religiosity that I thought wasn't needed. I thought the character Golic was annoying, so I didn't mind seeing less of him in the first cut. Unlike Paul Reiser's character in the second film who is punished for helping the alien, one never sees Golic's being punished. The scenes where we learn of Newt's death and Ripley's are anti-climactic as well. I am an African-American male concerned about media images of Black men. bell hooks, an African-American feminist scholar, once asked a class of college students to name positive African-American male characters in film. The only one the college students could list was the main character in "Brother from Another Planet." If I were posed that question, I'd immediately say Charles Dutton's character in "Alien 3." He was humble, though a leader. He was selfless. He protected Ripley from sexual abuse. He didn't stray from his moral convictions. However, in the extende.

I remembered this movie being so awesome when I was younger and I ordered this when I realized there was a cut I had never seen. Maybe it was because I had originally owned it on VHS and watched it on an 18" TV, but I did not remember the effects looking so god awful. It's embarrassingly bad. I'm pretty sure I've sold this already. I don't think the directors cut is that great although it was interesting to watch.

Like most sequels, it gets tougher to keep the audience engaged. Because I enjoy sci-fi so much, I would have seen this unless it was rated terribly. However, there are enough new elements that my interest remained. Still not as good as the original, but not bad for the 3rd in the series!!

This Steelbook is a fantastic grab for the price. While it may be a weak link in the franchise, the case is beautifully designed and is part of a re-release with this style art by UK-based Steelbook company Zavvi. I'd recommend it - I got it for 8 bucks, and can't complain at all at that price point.

This is by far my favorite alien movie because it's the complete antithesis to Aliens.Sure, the action sequences are nothing like before, but think about it: If Hicks and Newt actually survived, watching Alien 3 would've been like watching part two of Aliens, which is why their deaths made sense since Ripley, in my opinion, was meant to suffer a tragic existence since encountering the first alien.As for the product itself, it's a digipak (one annoying drawback).During the playback of the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 [on Disc 5], there is a slight jump between 1:13:44 and 1:13:45 for whatever reason, but the DVD itself never shut down or skipped to the point where there was no audio or video.There are a bevy of special features I have yet to watch, but I'm sure Disc Two will be fine.Pick this up, especially since The Assembly Cut seams together 30 minutes of additional footage that was edited out by the studio after numerous test audiences. This footage makes for a better movie, with gorier death scenes, an alternate opening and a new sequence which brings the alien into existence.Well worth the money.

It's difficult to stand up to the awesome achievement of the first two Alien movies, and while Alien 3 is arguably not as good as either of them, it certainly doesn't deserve its reputation as a failure.First, the good stuff: Alien 3 combines the creeping horror and atmosphere of the first movie with with the action and character-driven story of the second. The setting is amazing; I absolutely love the design of the prison planet. It's bulky, brutalist, industrial, and altogether the perfect setting for an Alien Movie. They say this movie lacks atmosphere, but they're completely wrong.Minor spoilers, but Newt and Hicks die before we even see them. Call me a jerk, but this made me happy. Those two had no business surviving Aliens and this was actually one of the things I liked the least about that otherwise amazing movie. Bishop also meets his end in a suitably nihilistic manner.From its first moments, this movie is actually creepy and scary--again, a plus over Aliens. We have horrific sequences of broken bodies washing up on the beach, autopsies, psychos slitting people's throats while desperately whispering "Sorry! Sorry!", and of course an Alien tearing people apart. For the action fans, there's also some pretty badass explosions.In my opinion, the movie has two glaring problems. First, the Alien itself. While it looks as amazing as ever in a closeups and other shots where most of the creature is hidden, it becomes painfully obvious that the model is fake whenever w.

I feel that the story was above average and most of the actors did really well. However, this movie seems a tad long for essentially repeating the story of "Alien," but taking place at a different locale. I think it would have been much better had the movie been about 20-30m less. Since this movie is simply repeating a plot, it relies more on the grotesque to give the audience something new. Yes, compared to the first two movies, I found this one and "Alien Resurrection" to be unnecessarily disgusting.

A lot of people disliked this movie back when it come out. Granted it wasn't perfect and had a lot of issues in production. This special edition features the same footage found in the Directors cut which was better than the original cinematic release which the studio took too strong a role in.The truth of the matter is that this is a weaker movie than the two which preceded it. That doesn't make it a bad movie though. Remember that Alien and Aliens were practically perfect movies which still hold up perfectly to this day. Alien 3 has an interesting setting with severe technical limitations compared to the space craft and other world colony in the first and second. There is only one alien and very few weapons - just like in the original. There isn't much tension though but that doesn't stop it being interesting or fun to watch. Sadly the effects don't hold up quite as well due to the style of puppetry used on the alien (it looks like early CG but was actually puppetry filmed separately and superimposed).One thing to appreciate a lot about the Alien franchise is that all three movies (yes there are only three movies which I consider canon, the rest - Resurrection, AVP/R, and Prometheus are just too bad to take seriously) are so tonally different. From settings to support characters to Ripley herself and her evolving state of mind and attitude.If you haven't seen Alien 3 yet then you really should. If you were disappointed with it after watching the first two then give it anothe.

The first three movies of the Alien franchise are directed by some of the best directors in the business. Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and now David Fincher, who all bring their own kind of strengths to the table. In Alien, it was minimalism and letting the suspense build without showing the aliens too much. Letting the tension build up and the reveal was shocking, and the story was good enough. Aliens, it's all about creature FX and action, which is right up James Cameron's alley and he did an exceptional job. So then to come to Fincher, who has strengths but none quite as obvious as the previous two as it regards the Alien movies.Alien 3 is a good movie, but it's not great. It's a typical case of where the quality suffers because of the films before it, otherwise this may as well have been another classic movie. Ripley is stuck in an all-male prison full of mostly spiritual dudes who are settled into their lives in prison. The leader of them, attempts to constantly use his religion to both intimidate and instill confidence in those around him. As the story progresses, there are many attempts to flesh out the lore of the Alien universe. Ripley is faced with something we haven't seen before, and the Alien has begun to evolve yet again into a new form we have not yet seen. The prisoners are reluctant to fight at first, but once the plan starts to come together after they start losing some of their own, the movie takes off.I can't say the Director's Cut is any better than the t.

Not the best of the series but not the worst. This movie gets bashed a lot, but more than it deserves. Following "Aliens" does not do this movie any favors. But it is enjoyable. My biggest complaint is with the characters Newt and Hicks. I think that sort of negates he ending of "Alien" and wasn't necessary to the plot.

David Fincher is excellent at killing characters off. Especially the protagonists. As with his other films, Alien 3 is just as underrated. Whenever a sequel is release the average movie audience automatically feels that it should be better than it's predecessor. It's not. Alien 3 is better. Absent is the overuse of firearms because only one round is fired in the whole film. That's new. Also new is the killing off of the annoying Newt character and Hick's is easily removed. The clean slate that Fincher works is refreshing. I enjoyed the dark mood, lack of massive character development, and the straightforward approach to the Jaguar like dog Alien that kills relentlessly within the confines and maze of metal tunnels. The prison population on Fury 161 scrambling to survive and clearly not prepared to understand the Dragon that they are faced to deal with is also refreshing. The cinematography, set design, wardrobe design, the religious underpinnings, editing and sound effects are top notch. The music score is also excellent. I think this film is the best of all the Alien films. I recommend several viewings with the Close Caption feature enabled so that all of the dialog will be understood. The Skinheads In Space are an all star cast that outperformed any Oscar contender. The best part of this film is that David Fincher mocks himself by satirizing it in a scene from Fight Club. Brad Pitt's character Tyler Durden breaks into a video rental store and bulk erases all the Alien 3 cop.

"What are we doing?""improvising!"The above exchange occurs between Sigourney Weaver's "Ripley" and Charles S. Dutton's "Dillon" during the concluding minutes of the film. It best describes a movie that was plagued from the beginning with script re-writes, budget constraints, executive interference, and last but not least, a change of directors. First-time helmsman David Fincher had the undaunted task of pulling off what seemed as project doomed from the start.He and his crew had to really "improvise."This fascinating two-disc set provides insight into the movie and its many problems. It would be to the viewer's advantage to watch the second disc first as it really offers a journey into the production of a motion picture. The commentary by the cast and crew is unbelievably honest as both discuss the ups and downs of project.One of the highlights is screenwriter Vincent Ward's original premise for the film. Had the story been used, the film would've had a different tone and, perhaps, been a better critical success.However, the real "find" is the special edition, featuring an additional (and much needed) thirty minutes. The extra half hour provides more character and plot development that improves the film tremendously. Even the modified "ending" is more poetic that the theatrical's version.While the film doesn't quite have the terror of the first or the action quota of the second, it is still a worthy installment in the franchise.For fans of the film or those interested.

This is by far my favorite alien movie because it's the complete antithesis to Aliens.Sure, the action sequences are nothing like before, but think about it: If Hicks and Newt actually survived, watching Alien 3 would've been like watching part two of Aliens, which is why their deaths made sense since Ripley, in my opinion, was meant to suffer a tragic existence since encountering the first alien.As for the product itself, it's a digipak (one annoying drawback).During the playback of the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 [on Disc 5], there is a slight jump between 1:13:44 and 1:13:45 for whatever reason, but the DVD itself never shut down or skipped to the point where there was no audio or video.There are a bevy of special features I have yet to watch, but I'm sure Disc Two will be fine.Pick this up, especially since The Assembly Cut seams together 30 minutes of additional footage that was edited out by the studio after numerous test audiences. This footage makes for a better movie, with gorier death scenes, an alternate opening and a new sequence which brings the alien into existence.Well worth the money.

It's difficult to stand up to the awesome achievement of the first two Alien movies, and while Alien 3 is arguably not as good as either of them, it certainly doesn't deserve its reputation as a failure.First, the good stuff: Alien 3 combines the creeping horror and atmosphere of the first movie with with the action and character-driven story of the second. The setting is amazing; I absolutely love the design of the prison planet. It's bulky, brutalist, industrial, and altogether the perfect setting for an Alien Movie. They say this movie lacks atmosphere, but they're completely wrong.Minor spoilers, but Newt and Hicks die before we even see them. Call me a jerk, but this made me happy. Those two had no business surviving Aliens and this was actually one of the things I liked the least about that otherwise amazing movie. Bishop also meets his end in a suitably nihilistic manner.From its first moments, this movie is actually creepy and scary--again, a plus over Aliens. We have horrific sequences of broken bodies washing up on the beach, autopsies, psychos slitting people's throats while desperately whispering "Sorry! Sorry!", and of course an Alien tearing people apart. For the action fans, there's also some pretty badass explosions.In my opinion, the movie has two glaring problems. First, the Alien itself. While it looks as amazing as ever in a closeups and other shots where most of the creature is hidden, it becomes painfully obvious that the model is fake whenever w.

The first three movies of the Alien franchise are directed by some of the best directors in the business. Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and now David Fincher, who all bring their own kind of strengths to the table. In Alien, it was minimalism and letting the suspense build without showing the aliens too much. Letting the tension build up and the reveal was shocking, and the story was good enough. Aliens, it's all about creature FX and action, which is right up James Cameron's alley and he did an exceptional job. So then to come to Fincher, who has strengths but none quite as obvious as the previous two as it regards the Alien movies.Alien 3 is a good movie, but it's not great. It's a typical case of where the quality suffers because of the films before it, otherwise this may as well have been another classic movie. Ripley is stuck in an all-male prison full of mostly spiritual dudes who are settled into their lives in prison. The leader of them, attempts to constantly use his religion to both intimidate and instill confidence in those around him. As the story progresses, there are many attempts to flesh out the lore of the Alien universe. Ripley is faced with something we haven't seen before, and the Alien has begun to evolve yet again into a new form we have not yet seen. The prisoners are reluctant to fight at first, but once the plan starts to come together after they start losing some of their own, the movie takes off.I can't say the Director's Cut is any better than the t.

I feel that the story was above average and most of the actors did really well. However, this movie seems a tad long for essentially repeating the story of "Alien," but taking place at a different locale. I think it would have been much better had the movie been about 20-30m less. Since this movie is simply repeating a plot, it relies more on the grotesque to give the audience something new. Yes, compared to the first two movies, I found this one and "Alien Resurrection" to be unnecessarily disgusting.

Warning: retrolio's Instant Video/streaming version is, as far as I can tell, just the old theatrical cut, not the extended "Assembly" or Special Edition one despite the listing showing a longer run time. Bummer. :(Wonderfully bleak and atmospheric, I always thought that Alien 3 fit in beautifully with the series - despite the controversy and fan outcry it received upon release. This one's worth watching just for Charles S. Dutton's fantastic performance as a charismatic yet menacing spiritual leader to, as Ripley says, "a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass-end of space."

Seeing Alien Resurrection for the first time I was confused how Lt. Ripley said in reply to a question that she died. Alien 3 made the connection for me. I'd seen 3 ages ago, didn't care much for it but seeing how it relates to Prometheus and Resurrection it all works.

"What are we doing?""improvising!"The above exchange occurs between Sigourney Weaver's "Ripley" and Charles S. Dutton's "Dillon" during the concluding minutes of the film. It best describes a movie that was plagued from the beginning with script re-writes, budget constraints, executive interference, and last but not least, a change of directors. First-time helmsman David Fincher had the undaunted task of pulling off what seemed as project doomed from the start.He and his crew had to really "improvise."This fascinating two-disc set provides insight into the movie and its many problems. It would be to the viewer's advantage to watch the second disc first as it really offers a journey into the production of a motion picture. The commentary by the cast and crew is unbelievably honest as both discuss the ups and downs of project.One of the highlights is screenwriter Vincent Ward's original premise for the film. Had the story been used, the film would've had a different tone and, perhaps, been a better critical success.However, the real "find" is the special edition, featuring an additional (and much needed) thirty minutes. The extra half hour provides more character and plot development that improves the film tremendously. Even the modified "ending" is more poetic that the theatrical's version.While the film doesn't quite have the terror of the first or the action quota of the second, it is still a worthy installment in the franchise.For fans of the film or those interested.

I enjoyed this after watching the first two (Alien and Aliens). I chose to stop my Alien marathon after this movie because the fourth one (Alien Resurection I think) got such HORRIBLE reviews. If you liked the first two you'll like this one. The only really different part about it is the blood/violence - it's waaay gory-er and bloody than the first two.

No amount of editing can cover up the fact that Alien 3 committed a sequel sin by undoing all the great things achieved by the characters at the climax of the previous film. You can tear your character/s back down from a big win (Rocky did it 6 times), but you can't go from "I love you Rocky!" straight to, "Can you believe it Mick? She dumped me!" Watch the original Karate Kid 1 & 2 in order if you don't believe me, or Star Trek III, which literally reverses the beautiful, altruistic theme of Wrath of Khan (still love those films though). What I'm saying is, killing off Newt and Hicks was the wrong way to go, and the franchise never fully recovered from losing those valuable additions.THAT SAID, Alien 3 the Special Edition (aka Assembly Cut) works better than the theatrical cut in terms of simply telling a story about finding yourself in hell, and struggling for redemption. The new version adds about 30 minutes of new footage, allowing all of the characters to grow and get fleshed out a bit more - especially Paul McGann's, who went from being background noise to a major player - and although the same problems still exist (less-than-visionary special fx, and a K-9-looking Alien "twist", for example), this version feels more like the first one, where the soul-less corporation is relentlessly pursuing a monstrous goal at the expense of any innocents who get in the way. In that sense, while never fully explained how it happened, its at least more bel.

This Steelbook is a fantastic grab for the price. While it may be a weak link in the franchise, the case is beautifully designed and is part of a re-release with this style art by UK-based Steelbook company Zavvi. I'd recommend it - I got it for 8 bucks, and can't complain at all at that price point.

The picture is awesome and the audio is great too. Definitely would recommend this Movie!

Not the best of the series but not the worst. This movie gets bashed a lot, but more than it deserves. Following "Aliens" does not do this movie any favors. But it is enjoyable. My biggest complaint is with the characters Newt and Hicks. I think that sort of negates he ending of "Alien" and wasn't necessary to the plot.

The streaming version is the theatrical version as of this date. This is the version with the dog. I prefer parts of this version but overall the new version is better. The story makes more sense. If youâ€™re looking for the original theater version like I was, this is one of the few places where you can still find it.

It presented a different spin on the events from the first two movies. It would have been nice for Ripley to have had a break from being chased and have had a 'happy-ever-after moment though. However it was not meant to be....There is one question about this movie that baffled me. How did the egg get on the ship and who laid it? The queen was never inside of the ship!

Like most sequels, it gets tougher to keep the audience engaged. Because I enjoy sci-fi so much, I would have seen this unless it was rated terribly. However, there are enough new elements that my interest remained. Still not as good as the original, but not bad for the 3rd in the series!!

A lot of people disliked this movie back when it come out. Granted it wasn't perfect and had a lot of issues in production. This special edition features the same footage found in the Directors cut which was better than the original cinematic release which the studio took too strong a role in.The truth of the matter is that this is a weaker movie than the two which preceded it. That doesn't make it a bad movie though. Remember that Alien and Aliens were practically perfect movies which still hold up perfectly to this day. Alien 3 has an interesting setting with severe technical limitations compared to the space craft and other world colony in the first and second. There is only one alien and very few weapons - just like in the original. There isn't much tension though but that doesn't stop it being interesting or fun to watch. Sadly the effects don't hold up quite as well due to the style of puppetry used on the alien (it looks like early CG but was actually puppetry filmed separately and superimposed).One thing to appreciate a lot about the Alien franchise is that all three movies (yes there are only three movies which I consider canon, the rest - Resurrection, AVP/R, and Prometheus are just too bad to take seriously) are so tonally different. From settings to support characters to Ripley herself and her evolving state of mind and attitude.If you haven't seen Alien 3 yet then you really should. If you were disappointed with it after watching the first two then give it anothe.
